This June, sci-fi fantasy movie Masters of the Universe heads into cinemas. The highly anticipated adventure movie from director Travis Knight (Bumblebee), stars Nicholas Galitzine, Camila Mendes, Idris Elba, and Jared Leto, and focuses on the journey of Adam – a young man destined to become He-Man, the most powerful man in the universe.
Adapted from the toy-line and cartoons of the same name, Masters of the Universe is being tipped as one of the biggest releases of the summer (and maybe even the year). Masters of the Universe has a long and loyal fanbase, dating back to the early 1980s, and is sure to draw in huge crowds eager to see iconic characters such as Skeletor and Man-At-Arms brought to life on the big screen.
But when Masters of the Universe hits screens in June, will it be suitable for all ages? Fans who have followed Masters of the Universe from the early days will certainly be old enough to view the film (sorry guys, we’re getting on a bit now), but what about young fans, will they be able to watch it on the big screen?
Can your kids or grandkids go and see Masters of the Universe? Will it be suitable for young children or a family audience?
Let’s take a look at the rating…

Masters of the Universe UK rating

In the UK, Masters of the Universe has been certified ‘12A’ by the British Board of Film Classification (BBFC). The film has received this rating for “moderate fantasy violence, innuendo (and) language”.
In terms of the “moderate fantasy violence” in the film, the BBFC notes: “There are frequent scenes of intense fantasy violence which include gunfire, stabbings, sword fights and fist fights. In one scene, a fantastical character’s jaw is ripped apart. In another, a person’s arm is ripped off. A character extracts a blade from their chest in close-up detail.”
Now, while this might sound quite a lot, the BBFC does say: “The violence is mostly depicted without any sight of bloody detail.”
In the UK, if a movie is given a ‘12A’ certificate it means the film is deemed most suitable for audiences aged 12 or over. However, anyone under the age of 12 can view a ‘12A’ in UK cinemas, as long as they are accompanied by a parent or adult guardian.
So, if you are a parent with children under the age of 12, and you plan on watching Masters of the Universe at the cinema as a family, you can. Just keep in mind, the BBFC rating and consider whether the youngest members of the family will be fine with a movie aimed at audiences aged 12 and above.
And to help you gauge what a ‘12A’ is like, most Marvel super hero movies (such as the Spider-Man, The Avengers, etc) are rated ‘12A’ in the UK. So, if you feel the youngsters in your household are fine with the average superhero movie, then they may be OK with Masters of the Universe.

Masters of the Universe US rating

In the US, Masters of the Universe has been rated ‘PG-13’ by the Motion Picture Association of America (MPA). The film has received this rating due to violence/action, some suggestive material, and language.
In the US, if a movie is rated ‘PG-13’ it means it may contain material which is deemed inappropriate for children under the age of 13. Parents are therefore urged to be cautious before showing a ‘PG-13’ to pre-teen audiences.
Now that said, any one of any age can watch a ‘PG-13’ movie in a US cinema. The rating is there as guidance only.
So, if you have a family with children of all ages, you will be able to attend a screening of Masters of the Universe. It is merely down to parents to determine if a film deemed most suitable for teens (and above) is suitable for your children.
As a guide, movies like The Avengers, Spider-Man, or the Captain America films are all rated ‘PG-13’ in the US. So, if your children are fine with those films, they should be fine with Masters of the Universe.

If you live in New Zealand, Masters of the Universe is an ‘M’. The film is a ’14’ in the Netherlands.
