Is The End of Oak Street suitable for children?

This August, sci-fi fantasy thriller, The End of Oak Street arrives in cinemas. The movie – directed by David Robert Mitchell – stars Anne Hathaway and Ewan McGregor, and focuses on a family who unexpectedly find themselves in danger when their street is transported to somewhere new. 

Describing the new movie, Warner Bros. Pictures, said: “After a mysterious cosmic event rips Oak Street from suburbia and transports their neighborhood to someplace unknown, the Platt family soon discovers that their very survival depends on them sticking together as they navigate their now unrecognisable surroundings.”

When The End of Oak Street arrives in cinemas expect it to be a popular choice with audiences. Sci-fi films are a big draw, plus this one includes dinosaurs which are also box office gold.

Dinosaurs also tend to attract young audiences – if the Jurassic Park / Jurassic World movies are anything to go by. But when The End of Oak Street makes its debut, will it be suitable for all ages? 

In particular, will it be suitable for dino-loving children? Let’s take a look at the age rating…

The End of Oak Street UK age rating

In the UK, The End of Oak Street has been awarded a ‘12A’ certificate by the British Board of Film Classification (BBFC). The film has received this rating due to “moderate threat, violence, injury detail (and) infrequent strong language.”

In the UK, if a movie is awarded a ‘12A’ certificate it means the film is deemed most suitable for audiences aged 12 or over. However, children below the age of 12 can watch a ‘12A’ in a UK cinema, as long as they are accompanied by a parent or adult guardian.

Based on the rating, the BBFC believe The End of Oak Street is most suited for audiences aged 12 and over, but the organisation does recognise that some children below this age will be OK with the content of the movie. Parental discretion is advised.

So, to clarify, if you are a parent and you have children below the age of 12, you can watch The End of Oak Street together in a UK cinema. You may just want to check up on some of the content before attending your screening.

And if you need additional help understanding what a ‘12A’ movie is like, most super hero movies (Spider-Man, The Avengers, etc) are rated ‘12A’ in a UK cinema, as are the Jurassic World films. If your children are OK with those movies, then they should be OK with The End of Oak Street.

The End of Oak Street US age rating

In the US, The End of Oak Street has been rated ‘PG-13’ by the Motion Picture Association of America (MPA). The movie has received this rating for “strong violent content, bloody images, some strong language and suggestive material.”

In the US, if a movie is rated ‘PG-13’ it means parents are advised to be cautious. Some of the content of the film may be inappropriate for children under the age of 13.

However, anyone can watch a ‘PG-13’ in a US cinema, irrespective of age. The MPA rating is for guidance only, allowing parents to decide if the movie is appropriate for their children based on the information provided.

And if you’re still unsure, recent movies such as Spider-Man: Brand New Day, Masters of the Universe, and Jurassic World: Rebirth are all rated ‘PG-13’. If your children are fine with those movies then they should be fine with The End of Oak Street.
