In a little over a month’s time, the highly anticipated horror sequel, Halloween (2018) arrives in movie theatres. The new film – directed by David Gordon Green – picks up directly after the original John Carpenter film (choosing to ignore all the sequels in the process) and sees Jamie Lee Curtis return to the series.

Halloween opens on October 19th – which is still quite a way off yet – however, yesterday the film received its official premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) and that means the reviews are now online!

Is it worth a watch?

Let’s find out…

  • Perri Nemiroff of Collider awarded Halloween A- and said: “Halloween is a shining example of what any other budding slasher reboot or sequel should strive to be, a film that doesn’t just lean on what made the character popular to begin with or explain that character away with backstory to the point that you obliterate the scare factor entirely. This Halloween movie is a near perfect blend of craft, character growth and nostalgia.”
  • Eric Kohn of IndieWire gave the film a B- and said: “The 2018 Halloween is a kind of cracked mirror variation on its precedent, caked in dust, but reflecting the same deep-seated fears. Yet in an intriguing twist, Green has revisited this familiar turf less to exhume an old nightmare than to chart a path toward waking up from it.”

  • Chris Bumbray of Joblo awarded Halloween a score of 8 (out of 10), calling it “a lean, mean, old-school slasher that will delight longtime fans and win new ones”. He added: “It’s a crowd-pleaser, and a beautifully made homage/follow-up to a movie that still holds up well.”
  • Peter Debruge of Variety, said: “David Gordon Green does horror fans a favour, bringing Michael Myers’ slasher movie saga back to its roots.”
  • And finally, John DeFore of The Hollywood Reporter was also positive about Halloween, noting that David Gordon Green offers a style of moviemaking “rarely seen in horror spinoffs.” He added: “(John) Carpenter should be pleased, and so should genre buffs — for once, this is a pic their less geeky girl/boyfriends should enjoy.”

So, there you have it – a fairly positive response! This latest Halloween certainly sounds like the movie to watch this October 31st, doesn’t it?
