As previously reported, Joker has passed the $1 billion mark at the worldwide box office. As of today, the film has a current box office take of $1,036,857,842.

Joker‘s financial success places it as the 36th highest grossing film of all-time. It is also the third most successful DC movie, sitting just behind The Dark Knight Rises (2012) and Aquaman (2018).

Will it surpass these movies?

It’s possible, but even if it doesn’t make as much money as these two films, it’s current success is very significant.

Why?

Because the film has not benefited from the Chinese market – and this is something of note.

I’ve mentioned this a number of times on this blog, but for those who came in late, China is a key market for making and breaking movies. Chinese audiences can considerably add to a movie’s box office total.

When The Dark Knight Rises opened in 2012, the film made $1,081,041,287. Of this figure, $52,785,334 came from China.

When Aquaman opened in 2018 it took a whooping $1,148,161,807. And of this figure, a jaw-dropping $291,800,000 came from China.

Joker hasn’t opened in China. And from the looks of things, it probably won’t.

The film’s content is deemed inappropriate for the Chinese market and unless things change, Joker will not make its debut in this territory. This means the film has achieved its impressive $1 billion+ box office total without a boost from China.

So, how does this compare to The Dark Knight Rises and Aquaman?

Well, doing the maths, if we deduct the Chinese box office results from The Dark Knight Rises and Aquaman totals, we get the following:

  • The Dark Knight Rises – $1,028,255,953
  • Aquaman – $856,361,807

So, without any assistance from the Chinese market, Joker has actually taken more at the box office than the two most successful DC movies.

Not bad. Not bad at all.
