This November, Godzilla Minus Zero is set to stomp its way into cinemas. The epic Japanese kaiju film – a sequel to 2023’s Godzilla Minus One – is written and directed by Takashi Yamazaki (he’s also responsible for the visual effects) and is aiming to build upon the critical and commercial success of its predecessor, which was a big hit three years ago.
Set in 1949, the new film sees Japan struggling to rebuild in the post-war era when a menacing new threat appears in the shape of the dragon-like monster, King Ghidorah. Thankfully, Godzilla also makes an appearance to rebalance the scales.
Describing Godzilla Minus Zero, Toho said: “War reduced Japan to zero, and Godzilla plunged it into minus. Two years have passed since then, and the country has faced agonizing struggles to achieve recovery and finally reclaim its daily life.
“Just as humanity managed to cling to a hard-won peace, a new threat strikes, crushing hope in an instant. There is no third time. Everything ends here.”
The studio added: “Shot entirely in Japan as the first-ever Japanese production to be Filmed For IMAX, GODZILLA MINUS ZERO was shot with high-definition digital cameras certified by IMAX, and optimized in sound and imagery unique to IMAX screens. The globally beloved monster returns to movie theater screens reaching greater and more terrifying heights, making GODZILLA MINUS ZERO a true cinematic event not to be missed.”
Now, that last paragraph is very important. This is a BIG monster movie destined for a BIG screen, and as such, IMAX screenings of Godzilla Minus Zero are going to be very popular.
Expect long-time Godzilla fans (as well as newcomers) to be booking seats at their nearest IMAX, and maybe even selling out screens in the process. And this in turn is sure to raise the profile of this already prolific release and make regular screenings busy too.
A number of cinemas are also offering up Godzilla Minus Zero merch, including a huge popcorn bucket in the form of Big G himself, which should only add to the hype. If this doesn’t bring monster movie fans through the doors I don’t know what will.
Either way, chalk this one up to being a popular release, that many cinemagoers will want to see on the big screen. But before rushing out to book tickets for Godzilla Minus Zero, you may want to check the age rating, to decide if this is one for you or the other Godzilla fans in your household.
Speaking of which, what is the age rating for Godzilla Minus Zero? Well, the US and UK have now confirmed their age ratings, so let’s take a look.
—
Godzilla Minus Zero US age rating

In the US, Godzilla Minus Zero has been granted an ‘R’ rating by the Motion Picture Association of America (MPA). The film has received an ‘R’ rating for some violent content and bloody images.
In the US, an ‘R’ rating means Godzilla Minus Zero is deemed ‘restricted’. This essentially means the movie contains some adult material and is largely seen as most appropriate for audiences aged 17 or above.
That said, ‘R’ rated movies aren’t necessarily adult-only pictures, they just contain material which position them more towards an older audience than a younger one. So, while Godzilla Minus Zero is an ‘R’ rated movie and therefore restricted, this doesn’t mean young Godzilla fans can’t watch the movie in a US cinema.
Here’s how it works: Aged 17 or above? Then you can watch Godzilla Minus Zero in a US cinema.
Aged under 17? Then you’ll need an accompanying parent or adult guardian.
So, an ‘R’ rating is restrictive to a certain point, but not completely restrictive. Young teens (those below 17) and even children can watch ‘R’ rated movies in a US cinema, as long as an adult is in attendance.
Godzilla Minus Zero is an ‘R’ rated movie, so plan accordingly.

Godzilla Minus Zero UK age rating

In the UK, Godzilla Minus Zero has been awarded a ‘15’ certificate by the British Board of Film Classification (BBFC). The movie has received this certificate due to “strong injury detail.”
In the UK, movies certified ‘15’ are deemed suitable for audiences aged 15 or over only. This means no one under the age of 15 will be admitted into a UK cinema to watch a ‘15’ certificate movie.
There are no exceptions to this and cinema staff are generally on the ball when it comes to ID’ing anyone who they believe is younger than 15. Why? Because if cinemas are found to be in breach of this rule they can be fined quite heavily, so it is important they adhere to it.
So, if you live in the UK and you happen to fall under the age of 15, unfortunately you won’t be able to watch Godzilla Minus Zero in a UK cinema. However, if you’re aged 15 or above, you will be fine.
Hope this helps.
