This July, the Minions are back in a brand new animated adventure. Directed by Pierre Coffin, and featuring the voices of Zoey Deutch, Bobby Moynihan, Allison Janney, Jeff Bridges, and Christoph Waltz, the film is titled Minions & Monsters and is set to make a splash this summer.
Set during the 1920s, the film sees the Minions take to Hollywood to try their hand at film production. Upon arrival, they set about making a monster movie with troubling results.
Describing the new movie, Universal Pictures and Illumination, said: “Fresh off the worldwide blockbuster success of summer 2024’s funniest comedy, Despicable Me 4, Illumination expands its joyful animated universe with a riotous new chapter, featuring all-new characters, in the biggest global animated franchise in history: Minions & Monsters.
“This is the rambunctious, ridiculous and totally true story of how the Minions conquered Hollywood, became movie stars, lost everything, unleashed monsters onto the world and then banded together to try and save the planet from the mayhem they had just created.”
When Minions & Monsters arrives in cinemas, the film is likely to attract a great deal of attention. The previous Minions movies were box-office winners, as were the Despicable Me movies.
But when Minions & Monsters arrives on screens, will it be suitable for all ages? The film contains monsters, which can be scary for young audiences, so will the content prove too much for little eyes?
Let’s take a look at the rating…

Minions & Monsters UK age rating

In the UK, Minions & Monsters has been awarded a ‘U’ certificate by the British Board of Film Classification (BBFC). The movie has received this rating for “very mild comic violence, threat, (and) rude humour”.
In terms of the violence, the BBFC regard it as “comic slapstick”, while the rude humour includes “comic innuendo”. The BBFC said: “There are some slightly prolonged scenes in which characters are in danger; however, the threat is often broken up with comic moments and all sequences end in a reassuring manner.”
In the UK, movies rated ‘U’ (Universal) are deemed suitable for all ages. Films with a ‘U’ certificate are unlikely to settle very young children and the overall content of the movie is set within a positive framework, often ensuring happy endings and plenty of smiles.
So, based on BBFC’s rating and guidance, the organisation believes Minions & Monsters should be fine for children of all ages. And if you’re still not sure, you might like to know that the previous Minions movies were also rated ‘U’ by the BBFC, so if the youngsters in your life were fine with those films they should be fine with this one too.

Minions & Monsters US age rating

Over in the US, Minions & Monsters has been rated ‘PG’ by the Motion Picture Association of America (MPA). The film has received this rating for violence/action, language and rude/macabre humour.
In the US, if a movie is rated ‘PG’, parents are urged to use their own parental guidance. ‘PG’ rated movies may contain some material which parents may not like for their children, so use your judgement accordingly.
However, to put things into context, the previous Minions movies were also rated ‘PG’ by the MPA. So, if you’re not sure about this new one, take a look at the previous films to get a general feel for the flavour and tone of the series.
