If you are a fan of Clint Eastwood, then you are no doubt familiar with his back catalogue of movies, including hits such as Dirty Harry, Blood Work, The Gauntlet, and the Any Which Way films. But outside of Eastwood’s action movies and thrillers, the actor has also starred in a large number of Westerns.
To date, Eastwood has appeared in 18 movies which fit within the Western genre. The first was 1956’s Star in the Dust (with Eastwood appearing in an uncredited role), while his most recent was the neo-Western drama, Cry Macho in 2021.
But how many of Eastwood’s Westerns have you watched? And more importantly, what are all of Clint Eastwood’s Westerns?
Below is a run-through of all of Clint Eastwood’s Western pictures. So, if you are not familiar with this sizeable collection of movies, now is your chance to dive in.
__
Star in the Dust (1956)
First up is the American Western, Star in the Dust from director Charles F. Haas. The movie is about a sheriff and a cattle-rustler.
However, a word of warning, those hoping for an all-star turn from Clint Eastwood will be sadly disappointed – this film is included for completists only. Eastwood’s role in this film is a minor uncredited one, with the actor playing a ranch hand.
__
The First Traveling Saleslady (1956)
Next up is the Arthur Lubin-directed Western comedy, The First Traveling Saleslady. Eastwood appears in this movie via a supporting role, playing the part of Lt. Rice.
__
Ambush at Cimarron Pass (1958)
Eastwood gets a more substantial role in this third offering (getting third billing when originally released). The movie is Ambush at Cimarron Pass – a film from director Jodie Copelan.
__
A Fistful of Dollars (1964)
Onto movie four now, and this is the one which really kick-starts Eastwood’s big run of Westerns. Directed by Sergio Leone, A Fistful of Dollars is a Spaghetti Western in which Eastwood takes the lead role as ‘the man with no name’.
__
For a Few Dollars More (1965)
Sergio Leone returns to the director’s chair for this next movie, which sees Eastwood take on the role of bounty hunter, Manco. The film is the second entry in Leone’s Dollars Trilogy, following on from A Fistful of Dollars.
__
The Good, the Bad and the Ugly (1966)
Concluding Leone’s Fistful of Dollars trilogy is this next entry: The Good, the Bad and the Ugly. Eastwood takes on the role of Blondie, for this spaghetti Western.
__
Hang ‘Em High (1968)
Ted Post directs this next film, which sees Eastwood play the part of Marshal Jedediah Cooper. The film follows the story of an innocent man who survives a lynching.
__
Coogan’s Bluff (1968)
A slight change in this next film, as it’s not quite a Western in the traditional sense (but it utilises Western themes). Coogan’s Bluff is a crime thriller in which Eastwood plays a deputy sheriff from a rural county, who travels to New York to extradite a fugitive wanted for murder.
__
Paint Your Wagon (1969)
Directed by Joshua Logan, and adapted from the musical of the same name, Paint Your Wagon is an all singin’ Western set in the midst of the gold rush-era of California. Eastwood stars alongside Lee Marvin and Jean Seberg.
__
Two Mules for Sister Sara (1970)
Don Siegel directs this Western about an American mercenary and a nun. Clint Eastwood takes on the role of Hogan, while Shirley MacLaine plays the titular Sister Sara.
__
Joe Kidd (1972)
In John Sturges’ Western, Joe Kidd, Eastwood takes on the title role in a story about an ex-bounty hunter hired to track down a Mexican revolutionary leader. Robert Duvall and John Saxon appear amongst the cast.
__
High Plains Drifter (1973)
In this next entry, Clint Eastwood not only stars, he also directs. The movie is High Plains Drifter – a film about a mysterious stranger who dispenses justice in a corrupt mining town.
__
The Outlaw Josey Wales (1976)
Eastwood pulls double-duties again in this next movie, by hopping back into the director’s chair for The Outlaw Josey Wales. Set after the American Civil War, the film tells the story of a farmer whose family is murdered by Union militants.
__
Bronco Billy (1980)
Eastwood directs once again for this Western-comedy drama, while also starring in the title role as ‘Bronco’ Billy McCoy. The movie co-stars Sondra Locke.
__
Honkytonk Man (1982)
Yet more directing from Eastwood in this musical Western comedy-drama. The screenplay for Honkytonk Man is written by Clancy Carlile, and based on his 1980 novel of the same name.
__
Pale Rider (1985)
Eastwood takes on the role of The Preacher for this next Western, which he also directed. Set in the Old West, Pale Rider‘s cast includes Michael Moriarty and Carrie Snodgress.
__
Unforgiven (1992)
Almost at the end of the list and Eastwood remains in the director’s chair once again for this next film: Unforgiven. Appearing alongside Gene Hackman, Morgan Freeman, and Richard Harris, the film follows the story of an aging outlaw and killer who takes on one more job, years after he turned his hand to farming.
__
Cry Macho (2021)
And finally, Eastwood stars and directs this neo-Western drama, about a former rodeo star who is hired to reunite a young boy with his father. Cry Macho is based on N. Richard Nash’s novel of the same name.
