This week sees the release of blockbuster disaster movie, Skyscraper. Written and directed by Rawson Marshall Thurber the film stars Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson and Neve Campbell and tells the story of a former FBI agent who must rescue his family from a newly built skyscraper taken over by terrorists… and on fire!

Skyscraper goes on general release on Friday 13th July, but will it be a die-hard popcorn flick or a towering disaster? Let’s see what the critics have said…

  • Sara Stewart of the New York Post awarded Skyscraper one star (out of four) and said: “Skyscraper should have been brainless fun — instead, it’s just brainless.” She added: “All that money and possibility, and yet here we still are, trapped in an endless cycle of clichés.”
  • William Bibbiani of IGN was more positive and called Skyscraper “a big, dumb and extremely entertaining riff on Die Hard and The Towering Inferno“. He added: “Living up to the legacy of Die Hard is a tall order, and Skyscraper never reaches those heights. But it’s a gigantic and silly blockbuster matinee of a movie, with likeable performances, absurd action sequences, and a heck of a lot of duct tape.”

  • In his review for Skyscraper, John DeFore of The Hollywood Reporter recommended that audiences check their brain at door, calling Skyscraper “one of the most idiotic action movies to come down the pike in some time.” He added: “It’s also a lot of fun if you’re willing to go with it, and getting viewers to go with things is one of several fronts on which The Rock routinely earns the money he gets paid.”
  • Peter Debruge of Variety said: “This is escapism, pure and simple, and though the structure is rickety, by enlisting Johnson, Thurber ensures that his “Skyscraper” is built on solid Rock.”
  • And finally, Benjamin Lee of The Guardian awarded Skyscraper three stars (out of five) and said: “At one point Johnson’s character remarks, “This is stupid,” a line that led to knowing laughter from the audience. This is stupid but it’s also mostly entertaining, thanks to Johnson and a plot that moves fast enough to retain our attention.”

So, there you go mixed reviews, but the general consensus is that the film is one huge popcorn movie. So long as you know what you’re in for by all accounts this is a fairly entertaining movie. Did you expect anything else?
