This June, spoof horror comedy, Scary Movie makes its debut in cinemas as part of the 2026 summer blockbuster season. The film – the sixth entry in the successful franchise – brings back many of the key players from the early days of the series, including Anna Faris, Regina Hall, Marlon Wayans, Shawn Wayans, Dave Sheridan, Cheri Oteri, and Lochlyn Munro, and aims to lampoon many iconic horror movies of the past few years.

Amongst the mix, there are jokes and japes connected to Halloween, Scream, The Terrifier, The Substance, Weapons, and Sinners amongst others. The studio behind the movie – Paramount Pictures – has made it clear Scary Movie is aiming to poke fun at everyone and everything, and crude and crass humour is very much the order of the day – regardless of who it might offend.

Now, if you’re familiar with the Scary Movie series you’ll know the films attract the attention of young audiences, specifically the teen-horror crowd. The films have become firm favourites with teenagers, even those who have perhaps never watched the horror movies that are being spoofed, and they are often the talk amongst youngsters.

But when Scary Movie arrives in cinemas will it be suitable for a teenager? Just because teens want to take a look at the movie, it doesn’t mean they should, so how does this one shape up?

Let’s take a look at the rating to find out.

Scary Movie UK age rating

In the UK, Scary Movie 2026 has been awarded a ‘15’ certificate by the British Board of Film Classification (BBFC). The film has received this rating for “strong language, sex references, drug misuse, violence, (and) nudity.”

In the UK, if a film is awarded a ‘15’ certificate it is deemed suitable for audiences aged 15 or over only. This rating means no one below the age of 15 can view a ’15’ certificate movie in a UK cinema.

This isn’t simple advice, it’s something which is enforced by cinemas. So, if you have a teen in your household who is itching to watch Scary Movie on the big screen, they are 13 or 14, and they want to watch the film with friends, be aware they are going to be asked for ID and turned away from screenings.

The BBFC believe Scary Movie is suitable only for some teenagers. If your kids are aged 15 or above (and they can prove their age), they will be fine, but those aged 14 or below will have to give this movie a miss at the cinema.

Scary Movie US age rating

In the US, Scary Movie 2026 has been rated ‘R’ by the Motion Picture Association of America (MPA). Scary Movie has received this rating for crude sexual content, graphic nudity, strong violence, and drug content and language throughout.

In the US, the ‘R’ rating means the film is classed as ‘restricted’. However, (and here’s where things differ between the US and the UK), in the US, anyone can watch an ‘R’ rated movie at the cinema, as long as those under the age of 17 are accompanied by a parent or adult guardian.

Does this mean Scary Movie is appropriate for all ages? Maybe not.

The MPA has set the ‘R’ rating and has provided advice about the content (crude sexual content, graphic nudity, etc). The organisation now hands it over to parents to decide if Scary Movie is suitable for their teenagers, based on the information available.
