This May, supernatural horror movie, Passenger makes its way into cinemas. Directed by André Øvredal (Autopsy of Jane Doe, Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark, etc), the movie stars Melissa Leo, Lou Llobell, and Jacob Scipio, and follows the story of a young couple who are pursued by a demonic stalker.
Describing the movie, Paramount Pictures said: “A few weeks into their van life adventure, a young couple witnesses a horrific accident that leaves the driver dead. Soon they’re being pursued by a demonic stalker who’s impossible to outrun and follows them wherever they go.”
With André Øvredal on director duties, and horror movies being very hot right now, Passenger is expected to be popular amongst cinemagoers this summer. It’s also likely to attract the attention of young horror fans.
But when Passenger arrives in cinemas, will it be suitable for everyone? More importantly, will Passenger be suitable for horror-obsessed teenagers?
Let’s take a look at the rating.
Passenger UK age rating

In the UK, Passenger has been awarded a ‘15’ certificate by the British Board of Film Classification (BBFC). The film has received this rating due to “strong violence, gore, horror (and) language.”
In the UK ‘15’ certificate movies are deemed suitable for audiences aged 15 or over only, meaning no one below the age of 15 can watch a ‘15’ certificate film in a UK cinema. It doesn’t matter if parents are tagging along, teenagers under 15 will be turned away.
As such, the BBFC believe Passenger is not suitable for everyone, only those aged 15 or above.

Passenger US age rating

In the US, Passenger has been rated ‘R’ by the Motion Picture Association of America (MPA), which means the movie is classed as ‘restricted’ viewing. Passenger has received this rating due to strong violent content, some gore, and language.
In the US, restricted viewing means no one under the age of 17 can view an ‘R’ rated movie unaccompanied. The MPA believe the film contains some material which might not be suitable for all ages.
However, in the US, audiences below the age of 17 can watch an ‘R’ rated movie in a US cinema, as long as they are accompanied by a parent or adult guardian. This means, your horror-obsessed teen could watch Passenger in a US cinema, as long as an adult is present.
Should they watch it? Well, that’s up to you to decide. The MPA have given the movie an ‘R’ rating but expect you to decide if the movie is suitable for the young horror fans in your household, using all the available information to make your decision.
