In 2001, animated sci-fi film, Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within, arrived in cinemas. The film, based on the Final Fantasy video game series, told the story of a group of scientists who attempt to save a post-apocalyptic Earth from an alien race.
Despite positive comments about its realistic animation, which utilised (at the time) state-of-the-art photorealism, Final Fantasy was not a hit with critics. The film also bombed at the box office, and failed to make back its budget.
