Based on the graphic novel of the same name by Alice Oseman, the television series, Heartstopper, is a coming-of-age LGBTQ+ drama about two high school students, Charlie Spring and Nick Nelson, who develop a romantic relationship after becoming friends. Although the relationship encounters a number of hurdles, and a few challenges along the way, Charlie and Nick’s story is one of understanding and optimism and since Heartstopper arrived on Netflix, the show has been a huge hit.
One of the reasons the show has been so successful is because of its impeccable understanding of the LGBTQ+ experience. Another reason is because Heartstopper features excellent characterisation.
But the show has also been praised for its dialogue, which includes some cracking lines. Lines such as those featured in this post.
Below you will find a selection of the best Heartstopper quotes taken from the show. These quotes highlight why the series is so good, and are sure to be instantly recognisable to all Heartstopper fans out there.

Tao – “Isn’t that Nick Nelson, the guy you sit next to in form?”
Charlie – “Who?”
Tao – “The one who looks like a golden retriever?”
Charlie – “He doesn’t look like a golden retriever!”
Charlie – “OK, he does.”
__
Tori – “Morning.”
Charlie – “Jesus, Tori.”
Tori – “Why’s your face like that?”
Charlie – “I broke up with my boyfriend.”
Tori – “Was he a knob?”
Charlie – “Yes.”
Tori – “Well done then.”
__
Nick’s mum – “Charlie seems like a lovely boy. When did you meet him?”
Nick – “Uh… couple of months ago. Uh, he’s in my form.”
Nick’s mum – “He’s very different to your other friends. Isn’t he? You seem much more yourself around him.”
Nick – “Do I?”
Nick’s mum – “You do.”
__

Charlie – “So, you don’t a crush on anyone at the moment?”
Nick – “Well… I didn’t say that.”
Charlie – “Oh.”
Charlie – “What’s she like then?”
Nick – “You’re just going to assume they’re a she.”
Charlie – “Are they… are they not a girl?”
Nick – “Um…”
Charlie – “Would you go out with someone who wasn’t a girl?”
Nick – “I don’t know. Maybe.”
Charlie – “Would you kiss someone who wasn’t a girl?”
Nick – “I don’t know.”
Charlie – “Would you kiss me?”
Nick – “Yeah.”
__

Nick – “I’m just so sorry I ran away last night. I was just freaking out because, uh… I was confused and surprised and, like, honestly… I’m having a proper, full-on gay crisis. And it’s not that I didn’t want to, you know… kiss you. I just… I was just so confused. I’ve just been so, so confused.”
__
Imogen – “I’m not like homophobic. I’m an ally.”
Tara – “Congratulations?”
Darcy – “We thank you for your service.”
__
Nick’s mum – “What’s up?”
Nick – “I said I’d go on a date with this girl, but I kind of also agreed to go to Charlie’s birthday party on the same day.”
Nick’s mum – “Oh, do you like this girl?”
Nick – “Well, um… her dog died.”
Nick’s mum – “Uh, not following.”
Nick – “She was really upset, and I felt bad. And she asked me out and I didn’t know how to say no. And I tried to tell her we probably shouldn’t go out, and I couldn’t, because I didn’t want to upset her when she was already crying about her dog.”
Nick’s mum – “Oh, okay.”
Nick – “I mean… A lot of people are expecting us to get together, but I don’t like her like that.”
Nick’s mum – “You shouldn’t go out with someone because you feel sorry for them.”
Nick – “Yeah.”
Nick’s mum – “Don’t worry. The right girl will come along, just you wait.”
__
Nick – “I wish I’d met you when I was younger.”
Charlie – “Yeah?”
Nick – “I wish I’d known then what I know now.”
__
Nick – “I really like you.”
Charlie – “You like me?”
Nick – “Wasn’t that obvious? Do you like me?”
Charlie – “Yes! Obviously.”
Nick – “Why are we like this?
__
Nick – “Do you ever feel like, you’re only doing things because everyone else is? And you’re scared to change, or do something that might confuse or surprise people? Your real personality has been, like… buried inside you for a really long time? I guess, uh, that’s how I’ve been feeling recently.”
__

Nick’s mum – “So, are you going to tell me what happened?”
Nick – “There’s not really anything to tell.”
Nick’s mum – “Oh, Nicky, come on baby.”
Nick – “Harry was saying some really nasty stuff about Charlie. He’s been really gross and mean about him for ages, and I just… lost it. I’m just so angry at myself for not seeing that all my friends… suck.”
Nick’s mum – “Sweetheart, you know fighting is not the answer.”
Nick – “I know. He just used a really bad word.”
Nick’s mum – “I see. Charlie’s a really special friend, isn’t he?”
Nick – “Yeah. He is.”
__
Nick – “After you left, and I went back to the group, he… he started saying some things about you. I just lost it. And punched him, and… yeah.”
Charlie – “Nick. You didn’t have to do that. I promise, I’m used to people saying stuff about me.”
Nick – “But you shouldn’t have to be. People shouldn’t be saying stuff about you in the first place. You shouldn’t have to put up with anything like that.”
Charlie – “I’m sorry.”
Nick – “No. You’re not allowed to say the ‘s’ word.”
__
Tori – “Are you angry at anything in particular? Or have you decided to finally have a rebellious phase? Did something happen?”
Charlie – “Didn’t you hear about Harry Green’s fight with Nick and Tao? Both my fault by the way.”
Tori – “Yeah. I’m like 95% sure they were both Harry’s fault, and I wasn’t even there. What’s going on?”
Charlie – “Before I met Nick, I was sort of going out with this other guy. I liked him, but he made me feel like I was ruining his life. Like he didn’t want me to even exist. And now Nick’s lost all his friends, and he’s getting into fights because of me, and I just feel like maybe I do just ruin people’s lives. And it would be better if I didn’t exist.”
Tori – “You’re not ruining my life.”
Charlie – “Thanks.”
__
Tao – “Why’s he avoiding you?”
Nick – “I think maybe he’s finding it hard having to lie to people about us. He’s not angry about me being in the closet or anything, like… he knows I’m not ready to come out, but…”
Tao – “Look, I’ve known Charlie since we were 11, and he’s always had a tendency to believe that him just existing is annoying for other people.”
Nick – “Yeah. I sort of got that impression.”
Tao – “He’s not going to force you to come out, which is good. He would literally never tell you this but he probably wants to be something more than ‘secret guy you kiss sometimes on the down low’. And if you can’t give him more than that, I mean, that’s fine, but it’s always gonna make him feel a little bit crap about himself.”
Nick – “Oh.”
__
Mr. Ajayi – “Don’t let anyone make you disappear, Charlie.”
__

Nick – “I don’t want to break up. I know that people have hurt you and you feel like I’d be better off without you, but I need you to know that my life is way better because I met you.”
Charlie – “You don’t have to say that.”
Nick – “I do. And I’ll keep on saying it until you believe me. Look, I don’t care about getting into fights or pissing off my mates, or anything like that. It’s all worth it to be with you. You are the kindest, most thoughtful, and caring, and amazing person in the whole world. And if you really want to break up then I would respect your decision, but I want us to be together.”
Charlie – “Nick.”
Nick – “You’re my favourite person.”
Charlie – “Nick.”
Nick – “I need you to believe me.”
Charlie – “Nick. I believe you. I believe you.”
__
Nick – “He’s my boyfriend. Charlie’s my boyfriend. I… I still like girls, but, um… I like boys too. And me and Charlie, we’re… we’re going out. And I just wanted you to know.”
Nick’s mum – “Oh, baby. Aw, thank you for telling me. I’m sorry if I ever made you feel like you couldn’t tell me that. You don’t have to say you like girls if you don’t.”
Nick – “No, I, um… It’s definitely not just guys. It’s called bisexuality. If you’ve heard of that?”
Nick’s mum – “I’ve heard of that. I wasn’t born in the 18th Century. How long have you known?”
Nick – “Well, um, me and Charlie started going out a couple of months ago, but… I started liking him way before that.”
Nick’s mum – “Oh, I love you.”
__
And finally…

Charlie – “Hi.”
Nick – “Hi.”
