The Star Wars films have been a part of pop culture for more than forty years, and as such, there are very few people on the planet who do not have some thoughts or opinions on the sci-fi/fantasy saga. But what is your first thought when it comes to the Star Wars movies?
If I asked you to tell me the first thing that popped into your head when I said ‘The Phantom Menace’, what would you say? What about your first thought on A New Hope?
I want to know your thoughts on the nine Skywalker movies. And to encourage participation, here are my first thoughts about each of the Star Wars films.
____
First thought on… The Phantom Menace

Darth Maul
Darth Maul is my first thought when I think of The Phantom Menace, followed very closely by John Williams’ epic Dual of the Fates, and (for better or worse) Jar-Jar Binks.
Why Maul? Well, despite only appearing in the movie for such a short amount of time the character featured so prominently on the marketing material for The Phantom Menace that in my mind, he is forever associated with this picture.
____
First thought on… Attack of the Clones

Jango Fett
Two movies in and on both occasions my first thought about each picture is about a villain who barely appears in the film – what are the odds? I guess that is the power of Star Wars (and clever marketing), that the minor character such as Jango Fett gets such prominence in my thought patterns, even though he’s not one of the lead characters.
____
First thought on… Revenge of the Sith

‘The only prequel you need to watch‘
When I think about Revenge of the Sith, the first thought that enters my head has nothing to do with a character or a plot point, but rather something to do with the film itself. My first thought is that Revenge of the Sith is the only prequel movie that anyone really needs to watch.
I appreciate that The Phantom Menace and Attack of the Clones have their fans, but for me Revenge of the Sith is the only prequel film that is essential. The other two films could easily be ignored.
____
First thought on… A New Hope

The Death Star
When I think about A New Hope, it’s as if millions of images pop into my mind and are suddenly silenced by one thought. That thought is of the Death Star.
____
First thought on… The Empire Strikes Back

“No, I am your father.”
Often misquoted often, but never bettered, “No, I am your father” has to be one of the most iconic moments in Star Wars history. And of course, it is the first thing that pops into my head when I think about The Empire Strikes Back.
The AT-ATs, Yoda, Boba Fett, and Lando are all runners up.
____
First thought on… Return of the Jedi

Jabba the Hutt
This one is very, very simple. I think Return of the Jedi, I think Jabba the Hutt, no question.
____
First thought on… The Force Awakens

‘Midnight screening”
I like The Force Awakens, a lot. And while there is a great deal in the movie that I think jumps out at me when I give it some consideration, my first thought is ‘midnight screening’.
The first time I watched The Force Awakens was with a friend on the day it opened – at midnight. It was the first time I had ever attended a midnight screening of a film, but it has since become somewhat of a tradition.
____
First thought on… The Last Jedi

Canto Bight
The more I watch The Last Jedi, the less I like it. However, there has always been one part of the movie I really dislike and that is the scene set on Canto Bight – aka the casino planet.
Yep, Canto Bight is my first thought whenever I think of The Last Jedi. Make of that what you will.
____
First thought on… The Rise of Skywalker

Palpatine
As far as I am concerned, Palpatine’s inclusion in The Rise of Skywalker was a huge misstep, yet he was such a significant part of the movie, I find it difficult to think of anything else. So yeah, my first thought about The Rise of Skywalker is Palpatine.

The Last Jedi – Leia flying in space like Mary Poppins
The Rise of Skywalker – the ruins of the Death Star in the sea

I laughed very hard at your first thought of Attack of the Clones. That scene is awful.
It’s a shame that the only prequel you’ve missed is the good one!
The Mary Poppins scene in The Last Jedi is probably most people’s first thought.
