This year marks the 25th anniversary of Spider-Man: The Animated Series, arguably one of the best animated shows of the 1990s. Along with Batman: The Animated Series, X-Men: The Animated Series and Gargoyles, Spider-Man: TAS helped to change the face of Saturday morning cartoons.

Ask many children of the ’90s and they will tell you how good the show was. They will also tell you that Spider-Man is a series they wish to see again in high definition Blu-ray.

But sadly, the Blu-ray dream is not meant to be (at least not now).

So what gives?

To date, Spider-Man: The Animated Series has never been released on Blu-ray. The series has had VHS, DVD and digital releases, but these have varied depending on where you live.

In the US, the series has never had a full DVD release (just selected episodes). However, it has been made available digitally, via iTunes.

In the UK there has been no digital release, but between 2009 & 2011 the show was released by Clear Vision Ltd in standard definition DVD. The company released all five seasons as individual boxsets, before producing a complete collection boxset containing all 65 episodes.

If you own those season boxsets, or you happen to have the complete collection in your possession, then treat them well and keep them safe – they are now HIGHLY DESIRABLE on the secondary market. The DVDs are long out of print, so scroll through eBay or Amazon and you’ll see what I mean about their value.

But enough about the DVD, where the heck is the Blu-ray?!

Well, that’s currently up to Disney. While bootleg Blu-rays are circulating around the internet, an official Blu-ray release is awaiting sign off from the Mouse House – and who knows when that will be?!

It’s such a shame – last year’s release of Batman: The Complete Animated Series Blu-ray boxset was a fine example of how ’90s cartoons should be handled, and Spider-Man: The Animated Series deserves the same treatment. The show still has a loyal fanbase and with Spider-Man: Far From Home riding high at the box office and Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse demonstrating how good Spidey ‘toons can be, now seems the perfect time for a release.

In the meantime, an equally good Spider-Man cartoon is available to purchase digitally from Amazon – the seriously underrated Spectacular Spider-Man. The show ran for 26 episodes across two seasons and is a true successor to Spider-Man: The Animated Series, even if it is in no way related.

In my opinion, Spectacular Spider-Man is a near perfect Spidey show – I wish it was still on air. I also wish Spider-Man: The Animated Series was still on air. I think I have difficulties letting go.

Either way, Spider-Man: The Animated Series deserves a Blu-ray release, simply so I can we can revisit fan favourite episodes such as Night of the Lizard, The Alien Costume, and Turning Point. Skipping over Make a Wish wouldn’t be a bad idea though – that episode was bad. So bad.

But I digress…

25 years on from its debut, Spider-Man: The Animated Series remains THE BEST Spidey show, so isn’t it about time it was released on Blu-ray?

*Pause for dramatic tension*

The answer is yes.

Heck, yes!
