In a month’s time, The Simpsons returns to US TV screens for its 30th season – an impressive feat. The Simpsons has been on air so long now that not only is it the longest running American sitcom, it’s also the longest running scripted prime time television series too.

Personally, I don’t watch The Simpsons much these days, but every once in a while I do like to watch the odd old episode from the ‘classic era’ of the show (Seasons 1-10). It’s possible that because I like to revisit old episodes and I pay no attention to the new ones that I seem to have overlooked something very worrying – something which sends a shiver down my spine.

I’m almost the same age as Homer Simpson!

According to Wikipedia (the fountain of all knowledge), Homer Simpson is currently listed as 38-years-old. His age has apparently varied over the years, from 34 to 40, but 38 is the age he is at the moment.

At the end of this year I turn 37-years-old – so I’m just over one year away from being as old as Homer Simpson. To make matters worse, Marge Simpson is said to be around 36-years-old, so I’m soon to be older than the matriarch of the Simpson clan too.

OK, so I know how this happened – I got old, whereas Marge and Homer have stayed (pretty much) the same age for 30 years. But even so, this is not fair.

The Simpsons first aired on December 17th 1989 – five days before my 8th birthday. MY 8th BIRTHDAY!

Lisa Simpson is 8-years-old!

I guess the silver lining here is that at least I’m not as old as Grandpa Simpson. Although if The Simpsons never gets cancelled I will eventually catch up with him too.
