The Simpsons has been on air so long now, that not only is the show the longest running American sitcom of all time, it is also the longest running scripted prime time television series… ever!

Pretty good going, right?

You bet it is!

But The Simpsons’ longevity has brought something rather upsetting to my attention. Let me explain.

I don’t watch The Simpsons much these days, but every once in a while I do like to watch the odd old episode from the ‘classic era’ of the show (Seasons 1-10). And it is because I only like to revisit old episodes that I seem to have overlooked something very worrying – something which sends a shiver down my spine.

I am older than Homer Simpson!

According to Wikipedia (the fountain of all knowledge), Homer Simpson is currently listed as 38-years-old. His age has varied over the years, from 34 to 40, but 38 is the age he is generally considered to be.

I am currently 38, but at the end of this year I will turn 39-years-old. Homer’s age won’t increase at the end of this year, but my age sure as hell will!

To make matters worse, Marge Simpson is said to be around 36-years-old, so I am older than the matriarch of the Simpson clan too.

OK, so I know how this happened – I got old, whereas Marge and Homer have stayed (pretty much) the same age for the past 30+ years. But even so, this is not fair.

This is an injustice!

And one that I really should have seen coming.

The Simpsons first aired on December 17th 1989 – five days before my 8th birthday. MY 8th BIRTHDAY!

Lisa Simpson is 8-years-old! When the show first started I was roughly the same age as Lisa.

But I quickly grew older than Lisa, and then Bart, then Marge and then Homer.

I guess the only silver lining here is that at least (for now) I’m not as old as Grandpa Simpson. Although if The Simpsons never gets cancelled I will eventually catch up with him too.
