In 1992, X-Men: The Animated Series made its debut. The comic book cartoon, based on the Marvel Comics characters of the same name, followed the story of a team of mutants who fight for equality in a world that hates and fears them.

Upon making its debut, X-Men: The Animated Series was deemed a hit with audiences and quickly became appointment television. Critics loved the compelling writing and excellent character work, while fans appreciated the care that was taken to ensure the X-Men mythology was presented in a respectful and entertaining way.

One of the key aspects of X-Men: The Animated Series was its cast of heroes, including the likes of Jean Grey, Beast, and Jubilee. And one of most notable mutant heroes in the show was Gambit, who appeared in almost every episode of the series.

Due to the continual appearance of Gambit, the character featured in all of the major storylines including Night of the SentinelsThe Final Decision, The Phoenix SagaThe Dark Phoenix SagaBeyond Good and Evil, and many more. But outside of the major team-up episodes, Gambit also took centre stage in a collection of other stories.

These stories focused a bit more specifically on Gambit, including his mysterious past, his connection to the Thieves Guild, and his desire to go solo when the need arises. The episodes also saw Gambit cross paths with the X-Ternal, Bishop, and the Sentinels.

But if you’re new to the series and you want to catch up on Gambit’s history, where do you begin? By following the episodes detailed below!

Slave Island

The first major Gambit episode is Slave Island. In this story, Gambit, Storm, and Jubilee are on the island of Genosha, where they are enslaved and forced to build a dam which will power the construction of Sentinels.

During the course of the episode, Gambit manages to escape capture, after seemingly betraying his fellow mutants. But is Gambit really a turncoat or is this all part of a plan to free everyone?

Days of Future Past – Part One

In Days of Future Past – Part One, the world has gone to hell in a future timeline. Following a political assassination, Sentinels take control and either kill mutants or enslave them.

One of the mutants still alive is Bishop, who is sent back in time to the 1990s, to stop the assasination and hopefully avert the dystopian future. Unfortunately, Bishop believes the assassin to be Gambit.

Days of Future Past – Part Two

Continuing the story in Days of Future Past – Part Two and Bishop is keeping a close eye on Gambit, as the X-Men head to Washington to stop the assassination of Senator Kelly. But things get particularly tricky when Gambit sneaks off to find the real culprit and prove his innocence.

X-Ternally Yours

In X-Ternally Yours, Gambit receives a phone call which triggers a return to his roots. Here he gets mixed up in an ongoing family feud, which includes the Thieves Guild, his ex-fiancé, Bella Donna, and the mysterious X-Ternal.

Sanctuary – Part One

In Sanctuary – Part One, fed up with the state of human/mutant relations, Magneto announces his plan to transport all willing mutants off the planet and take them to his orbiting asteroid. Gambit decides he wants to accept Magneto’s offer, but he has an ulterior motive.

Sanctuary – Part Two

Continuing the story in Sanctuary – Part Two, and as Magneto finds himself in danger and betrayed by someone he trusted, Gambit is on a mission to reconnect with someone from his past.
