In 1992, Batman: The Animated Series landed on television. The cartoon show, based on the DC Comics character of the same name, followed the story of Batman and his ongoing fight for justice in Gotham City.
Upon making its debut, the series was deemed a colossal hit with audiences and fast became must-see television. Critics loved the show’s sharp writing, excellent plotting, and superb animation, while fans appreciated the care that was taken to ensure the Batman mythology was presented just right.
One of the defining successes of Batman: The Animated Series was its crazy cast of core villains. And one of the best rogues was the Riddler, aka Edward Nygma, who appeared in the series multiple times.

Below is a list of every episode of Batman: The Animated Series featuring the Riddler. In total, the Riddler appeared six times, which includes four main appearances and two cameos.
The Riddler’s main appearances are as follows:
If You’re So Smart, Why Aren’t You Rich?
The Riddler made his debut in the episode, If You’re So Smart, Why Aren’t You Rich?. In this episode, software designer, Edward Nygma is fired from his job at Competitron – something his smug boss, Daniel Mockridge takes great pleasure in.
Two years later, while Mockridge is in the process of selling his company, he is kidnapped by Nygma, who is now calling himself the Riddler. The Riddler uses a series of riddles in his crime, prompting Batman and Robin to work out the perplexing puzzles to track down the missing Mockridge.
What is Reality?
In What is Reality?, a mysterious puzzle box arrives at Gotham City Police Headquarters. When Batman and Robin arrive to investigate, the box opens to reveal a computer.
As Batman is sent on a wild goose chase by the Riddler, Robin and Commissioner Gordon attempt to decipher the purpose of the computer, leading the pair to uncover a virtual reality Program. Gordon gets caught up in the VR program, prompting Batman to enter the virtual world in an attempt to rescue the Commissioner from the Riddler’s clutches.
Riddler’s Reform
In Riddler’s Reform, Edward Nygma is released from prison and is apparently keen to put his old criminal life behind him. After partnering with a toy manufacturer to create a collection of brain-teasing toys, Nygma’s puzzle toys become the talk of Gotham City.
But is the Riddler really ready to change his ways? Batman doesn’t think so.
Judgement Day
In Judgment Day, a new vigilante calling himself the Judge is in Gotham City. Not only does this cause a headache for Batman, but also for the Riddler, Two-Face, Penguin, and Killer Croc.
