While some people will tell you that Christian Bale is the best actor to play Batman, and others will tell you the best Batman actor is Michael Keaton, for many there is only one Dark Knight – and it’s Kevin Conroy. The voice actor, who provided vocal duties for Batman/Bruce Wayne from 1992 until his death in 2022, was one of the best loved actors to play the Caped Crusader.

Conroy first took on the role of Batman for the TV show, Batman: The Animated Series. From here he continued to play the part across various spin-off shows and games, as well as an ever-expanding collection of movies.

Initially the movies were continuations and spin-offs of Batman: The Animated Series, but over time Conroy became the go-to Dark Knight for some of the best animated DC movies around. Pictures such as Batman: Gotham Knight and Justice League: Doom.

But what are all of Kevin Conroy’s Batman movies? In this post I will provide the answer, as I highlight every animated Batman film to star Kevin Conroy.

Let’s get started.

As noted above, Kevin Conroy began his long-term association with the Caped Crusader in Batman: The Animated Series. The show which initially aired in 1992 became a smash hit and is still cited as one of the greatest interpretations of Batman ever.

During the height of the show’s popularity, the series spawned the animated movie, Batman: Mask of the Phantasm. Conroy voiced Batman/Bruce Wayne for the movie, which was the first animated Batman film to be shown on the big screen.

After Batman: The Animated Series concluded, Conroy remained in the role of Batman across various spin-off shows, which all fell under the collective banner of the DC Animated Universe (DCAU). In turn, some of these shows were followed by direct-to-video movies, giving Conroy the opportunity to portray Batman in yet more feature-length adventures.

In total, Conroy voiced Batman in four animated movies within the DCAU. The films are as follows:

  • Batman: Mask of the Phantasm (1993)
  • Batman: Subzero (1998)
  • Batman Beyond: Return of the Joker (2000)
  • Batman: Mystery of the Batwoman (2003)

If you wish to watch these movies in the order they appear in the DCAU timeline, you should view them as follows:

  • Batman: Mask of the Phantasm (1993)
  • Batman: Subzero (1998)
  • Batman: Mystery of the Batwoman (2003)
  • Batman Beyond: Return of the Joker (2000)

The DCAU came to an end in 2006 with the conclusion of the TV show, Justice League Unlimited, however this wasn’t the end for the Conroy/Batman association. Moving forward the actor was asked to play the role of Bruce Wayne/Batman for a new collection of animated films under the DC Universe Animated Original Movies (DCUAOM) banner.

DC Universe Animated Original Movies (DCUAOM)

Launched in 2007, DC Universe Animated Original Movies (DCUAOM) was conceived as an ever-expanding collection of animated DC films. Many of the movies were designed to have separate continuities, allowing for different interpretations of the same characters, as well as a revolving door of voice actors to play the parts.

Conroy’s first animated movie for the DCUAOM collection was the 2008 anime-inspired movie, Batman: Gotham Knight. Here Conroy voiced Batman in a feature-length anime movie built around different story segments, each boasting its own animation style.

The next year Conroy played yet another version of Batman, this time for the team-up movie, Superman/Batman: Public Enemies. He reprised the role the following year for its direct sequel, Superman/Batman: Apocalypse.

From here onward, Conroy would regularly be asked back to voice a new take on Batman for films including Justice League: Doom (2012), Justice League: The Flashpoint Paradox (2013), Batman: Assault on Arkham (2014) and Batman: The Killing Joke (2016). The Killing Joke was viewed as an important adaptation of a classic comic book storyline, so Conroy was the fan-favourite choice to lead the movie opposite Mark Hamill as the voice of the Joker.

In 2017 and 2019, Conroy voiced the Dark Knight for two movies inspired by the DCAU – Batman and Harley Quinn and Justice League vs the Fatal Five. These movies were not connected to Batman: The Animated Series or the DCAU, but did borrow the animation style of this era of Batman stories.

And then finally, in 2024, two years after Conroy passed away, Warner Bros. released Justice League: Crisis on Infinite Earths – Part Three. This film marked Conroy’s final performance as Batman for an animated movie.

Should you wish to check out Conroy’s work in the DC Animated Universe Original Movies collection, here is a list of the movies where he played Batman:

  • Batman: Gotham Knight (2008)
  • Superman/Batman: Public Enemies (2009)
  • Superman/Batman: Apocalypse (2010)
  • Justice League: Doom (2012)
  • Justice League: The Flashpoint Paradox (2013)
  • Batman: Assault on Arkham (2014)
  • Batman: The Killing Joke (2016)
  • Batman and Harley Quinn (2017)
  • Justice League vs the Fatal Five (2019)
  • Justice League: Crisis on Infinite Earths – Part Three (2024)

In addition to the above movies, Conroy had a brief voice role in Batman vs Robin (2015). Here he voiced Thomas Wayne, the father of Bruce Wayne.

There was a reason why Kevin Conroy played the part of Batman so many times – he was simply excellent in the role. Not only did he understand the character in a way that few do, he also managed to create a screen presence that became second to none.

For the generation who grew up on Batman: The Animated series, Conroy WAS Batman, but for the generations that followed, he continued to prove that without doubt he was one of the best (if not THE best) Batman movie actors of all time.
