In 1984, comic book movie, Supergirl flew into cinemas. The fantasy film – a spin-off from the Christopher Reeve Superman movies – starred Helen Slater as Kara Zor-El aka Supergirl, Superman’s cousin!
When the movie arrived in cinemas there was hope that Supergirl could become as successful as the Superman movies, however the critical reception was not good, and audiences opted to give it a miss. As such, it flopped at the box-office, taking just $14.3 million from a budget of $35 million.
Yet despite the commercial failure of Supergirl, the film did manage to find an audience through the video rental market and through TV screenings. As such, not only did it become a cult hit in later years, it also wasn’t the only time Supergirl would take to the big screen.
But how many Supergirl movies are there and is there a particular viewing order? For all the super-details keep reading.

The Supergirl movies

Supergirl (1984)
As noted above, the first time Supergirl appeared on the big screen was via the self-titled film in 1984 starring Helen Slater. The movie told Supergirl’s origin on Argo City, and detailed her first experiences on Earth.
Introduced as Superman’s cousin, Supergirl found herself defending the planet from a would-be witch who is in possession of a powerful object known as the Omegahedron. Along the way she meets Lucy Lane and Jimmy Olsen, although sadly Superman was off-planet during her visit. (124 mins)
The Flash (2023)
Almost 40 years would pass before Supergirl would return to the big screen, and when she did make her next appearance it was via the DC Extended Universe movie, The Flash. In this film, Sasha Calle took on the role of Kara Zor-El aka Supergirl for a multiverse story which involved two versions of the Flash, as well as multiple Batmen.
In the film, Barry Allen aka the Flash travels back in time to save his mother from dying in the past. However, his meddling alters the timeline, which in turn introduces Supergirl. (144 mins)
Superman (2025)
The next time Supergirl would appear on screen was in 2025, via the DC Universe movie, Superman. This film – which shared no connection to the previous movies – reintroduced Superman for a new generation.
David Corenswet played the role of Superman, opposite Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, and Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor. The role of Kara Zor-El went to Milly Alcock, who appeared towards the very end of the movie in a very brief cameo appearance to pave the way for her solo movie, 2026’s Supergirl. (129 mins)
Supergirl (2026)
Following on from Superman, Supergirl saw Milly Alcock reprise the role of Kara Zor-El for another entry in the DC Universe. In this film, Kara celebrates her birthday by traveling across the galaxy with her dog, Krypto, and meets the bounty hunter, Lobo, along the way.
