You’ve seen the trailer for the new Supergirl movie. You’ve probably seen some of the promotional material for the press tour too.

And during all this press and publicity content you’ve no doubt clocked something – or perhaps someone – you didn’t expect. Jason Momoa is part of the movie.

Momoa appears alongside Supergirl star Milly Alcock, but rather confusingly his character, Aquaman is nowhere to be seen in the film. In fact, Momoa doesn’t appear to be reprising the role of Aquaman for this summer’s Supergirl.

So, what gives? Why isn’t Jason Momoa playing Aquaman?

Well, the simple answer is because Jason Momoa is now playing the role of Lobo the bounty hunter. Lobo features in Supergirl, with Momoa taking the part.

As for the reason why Momoa is no longer playing the part of Aquaman, it’s because his time in the role is over. The universe he belongs to, i.e. the DC Extended Universe (2013 – 2023), is no more.

Momoa’s Aquaman movies, along with Henry Cavill’s Superman films, the ShazamWonder Woman, and Suicide Squad pictures etc, all came to an end in 2023. From 2025’s Superman onward the DC Universe took over, Supergirl is a part of this universe, and Momoa was recast as Lobo.

And now you know.
