From Super Mario Bros., Doom, and Sonic the Hedgehog, to Moshi Monsters, Tetris, and Gran Turismo, Hollywood loves turning popular computer games/video games into movies. And it stands to reason really, because games are extremely popular; they have a wealth of interesting and dynamic characters; and they come pre-loaded with immersive lore and exciting storylines to build epic worlds around.
All of the above is very attractive to movie studios, and despite the difficulties they face when trying to adapt games into films (how do you make something playable into something watchable?), it never seems to stop them from having a go. As such, there are more than 100 game-to-movie adaptations, from live-action films through to animation.
Are all of the movies good? Heck no – most are poor, but they keep on coming regardless, because every once in a while they make lots of money!
Take the animated film, The Super Mario Bros. Movie which debuted in cinemas in 2023. Not only did the film go on to become one of the most successful movies of the year, but it also took over $1.3 billion at the worldwide box-office, which is a HUGE amount of cash.
The Sonic films have also been successful, with Sonic the Hedgehog making almost $320 million in 2020, Sonic the Hedgehog 2 hitting $405 million in 2022, and Sonic the Hedgehog 3 taking over $491 million in 2024. Similarly, 2022’s Uncharted made $407 million, while the Resident Evil movie series is a billion dollar franchise.
The Pokémon movies, Mortal Kombat, Street Fighter, and Tomb Raider have also experienced varying levels of success. And in 2023, Five Nights at Freddy’s was also a financial hit, paving the way for a sequel.
But have you ever wondered what all the game-to-movie adaptations are? You have? Well, wonder no longer, because in this post I am providing a list of all the game-based films you could ever wish to watch (or avoid).
Whether you like them all or not, there are plenty to lock your eyeballs on, with many more to come. You think the list is long now, just wait a few more years and it’ll be even longer!

That’s a lot of video game adaptations, right? Yes, but Hollywood has barely scratched the surface – many, many more are on the horizon.
Movies based on video games are a hot commodity, and they’ve been consistently appearing in cinemas, on home video, and via streaming for decades now. Sure, not all of them make lots of money, but every once in a while they do, and with an in-built fanbase already at Hollywood’s disposal, it would be strange not to keep trying to make the next money spinner.
If your favourite game doesn’t already feature on the above list, just give it time. At some point in the not-too distant future it’ll be there – and probably sooner then you think!

One Response to List of movies based on video games
Hi, this is a great list but I think it should separate live action from cartoons/cgi movies.
