In 2015, the BBC broadcast the British historical-fiction series, The Last Kingdom. The television show – based on The Saxon Stories by Bernard Cornwell – starred Alexander Dreymon as Uhtred, and followed his story as he overcomes adversity during the years 866 to 878.

When The Last Kingdom made its debut on BBC Two, the eight-episode series was a big hit with UK audiences. The critical response to the series was also positive, and this ensured that a second season was quickly commissioned, which became a joint production between the BBC and Netflix.

Season two of The Last Kingdom began airing in 2017, comprising a further eight episodes. Moving forward, Netflix took over the production of the series for a third season in 2018, and a fourth season in 2020, both comprising ten episodes a piece.

A fifth and final season of The Last Kingdom aired in 2022. This season comprised a further ten episodes, and effectively brought The Last Kingdom‘s TV story to an end.

In total, five seasons of The Last Kingdom were broadcast between 2015 and 2022, clocking up 46 episodes in the process. However, while the TV series did conclude, this wasn’t the end of The Last Kingdom story.

In 2023, Netflix revived the show via the feature-length movie, The Last Kingdom: Seven Kings Must Die. The movie was given a Netflix streaming release date of April 14th 2023.
