In 1997, Starship Troopers blasted its way onto cinema screens. The sci-fi action-adventure movie, based on a novel of the same name by Robert A. Heinlein, followed the story of a futuristic military unit, fighting in a war between humans and alien insectoids.

Starship Troopers was directed by Paul Verhoeven. Notable cast members in Starship Troopers included Casper Van Dien, Denise Richards, Dina Meyer, and Michael Ironside.

Although critics were not initially hot on the film, Starship Troopers quickly became a cult favourite, spawning a number of follow-up movies. But how many Starship Troopers movies are there and what is the correct viewing order?

The Starship Troopers live-action movies in order

To date there are three entries in the live-action Starship Troopers movie series. The movies appear in the following order:

• Starship Troopers (1997)
• Starship Troopers 2: Hero of the Federation (2004)
• Starship Troopers 3: Marauder (2008)

The animated Starship Troopers movies in order

In addition to the three live-action Starship Troopers movies listed above, the Starship Troopers series was accompanied by two animated movies. The movies were released in the following order:

• Starship Troopers: Invasion (2012)
• Starship Troopers: Traitor of Mars (2017)

Going beyond the movies

And should you want to go beyond the live-action and animated movies, you may wish to know the Starship Troopers brand also includes a six-part original video animation (OVA), Starship Troopers (1988), as well as the CGI animated television series, Roughnecks: Starship Troopers Chronicles (1999 – 2000).

The OVA was inspired by Robert A. Heinlein’s original novel, pre-dating the movie series by nine years. However, the Roughnecks TV series was produced shortly after the release of the first movie, and is more closely aligned with the ‘90s/’00s films.
