Thomas Magnum, Jesse Stone, Peter Mitchell, Matthew Quigley – these are all roles that actor Tom Selleck has handled in his stride. But how about Tom Selleck the Author? How is he fairing in this particular role?
Pretty well, it seems – or at least that’s according to the man himself, who is currently putting together a new book about his life. Sure, he might be busy with a long-running stint on Blue Bloods, as well as development duties on Jesse Stone 10, but somehow he has still found time to work on his memoirs!
In a recent interview with Parade, Selleck opened up about the forthcoming book. He explained that the book will look back at his acting career, and fill in a lot of blanks – specifically detailing information that fans are less familiar with.
He said: “I really want to share my 50 years of show business, or how many years the book deals with, (and) what it was like to start in a business that I never anticipated being in.
“I never wanted to be an actor, I never did a play, I never did anything. I got lucky and got exposed to it under contract with 20th Century Fox. So that road—and I’m quite a ways in – that road is not what the audience thinks it is.”
He added: “From Magnum on, I was in a different ballpark. (Fans) don’t have any idea of the years before that, which were humiliating and informative and ultimately a blessing. I got my first regular job when I was 35 years old, and those early years I’m finding pretty interesting.”
According to the actor, the book is “progressing” and he’s “working diligently on it.” As for when fans can expect it, well in Selleck’s own words “when it’s ready it’ll be ready.”
What the actor has made clear is that the book is about his journey – he isn’t writing his memoirs to dish dirt about the industry. Selleck’s decades-long career has been a successful and fruitful one, and he’s not interested in telling tale tales.
He said: “I’m not settling scores. I would hope to provide a book that if people want to know about my career, it will be the reference but not in an academic way. It’s, to me, a very emotional book and I’m sharing a lot of stuff I haven’t shared.”
The book is still very much in the writing stages at present, but when it eventually hits book shelves, fans of Selleck will no doubt find it to be a real page-turner – and very conversational. According to Selleck, “the book is lending itself to a real voice, my voice. Or my voice that I’m willing to share. I’m just trying very hard to have a personal conversation with the reader.”
Does this sound like something you would want to read? If you said ‘yes’, then let’s just hope it isn’t too long before the actor finishes off his story and gets the book to print. Selleck has played many roles, and has appeared in a bunch of fan-favourite movies, so his memoirs sure sound like they will provide a very interesting read!
