If you’re a fan of the Jesse Stone movie series then you will know it has been a while since there was a new Jesse Stone movie. The last film to hit screens was Jesse Stone: Lost in Paradise, which was released back in 2015, and there has been no new movie since.
However, I bring some good news: It would seem that things are (slowly) starting to finally move forward with the next instalment. Although, be warned, there is still a way to go before this project makes it to the finish line – so don’t get too excited.
You’re getting excited, aren’t you? Well, don’t – not yet anyway.
Parade recently caught up with Jesse Stone star, Tom Selleck, to talk about various subjects, ranging from his work on the hit television show, Blue Bloods, through to the development of his new book (aka his memoirs). During the lengthy discussion, the interview turned to the subject of Jesse Stone, giving the actor the opportunity to provide an update on the next movie.
Before diving into this update, the first thing to note is that Selleck seems very enthusiastic about the project – and this is a very good sign. It has been a long-time coming, but Jesse Stone 10 is still in active development, which means the movie hasn’t been abandoned or forgotten about – it is very much on its way!
The second thing to note is, that while the new movie is being actively developed, when it arrives it may not land in the usual place. Don’t expect Jesse Stone 10 to pop up on Hallmark, as the film could be heading elsewhere.

Dealing with the movie first, Selleck said: “It’s coming along well.” The actor commented that both he and Jesse Stone Executive Producer Michael Brandman are “very enthused about it. It’s just taken a while.”
As for WHERE the movie will air, well, it would seem that when Jesse Stone does return to screens, the new film may not automatically land on Hallmark – the most recent home of Jesse Stone. Selleck feels that Stone might be a better fit for another platform, to ensure there is a certain creative freedom to the project, and this is something which is currently being weighed up.
He said: “In some ways going to some of these other streaming outlets, like Netflix or Amazon, it’s a new world. I’ve always felt Jesse suffers a little bit under the strains of some of the conventions of broadcast television. He’s a fairly dark individual. They’re adult stories and I think we can make them more so with a little more, not license, but freedom.”
He continued: “So, I’m enthused, but I don’t have anything. I have agents and they’re talking.”
Picking up on the comments about Hallmark, it’s worth noting that Jesse Stone 10 may not end up moving to a new home – the next film could still pop up on Hallmark, as nothing has been decided yet. Although according to Selleck, “(Hallmark are) changing, from what I hear, all their mystery stuff”, suggesting that a few backstage changes at the channel could be taking place.
And this leads into the final comment Selleck made, which suggests that Jesse and Hallmark might not be the best bedfellows, simply because Jesse doesn’t fit the traditional Hallmark template. He said: “Jesse’s not politically correct (like other Hallmark characters) and I’m not interested in getting any more politically correct.”
This suggests that in order for Jesse to remain with Hallmark, the character may need to be tweaked a little. It would seem that Selleck is not quite keen on this, as Jesse is who he is, so this is why the film could be on the move.
So, what does this update all mean? Well, in short: Jesse Stone 10 hasn’t begun filming yet; there’s no title and no release date. But Selleck is all very positive about the project, work is being undertaken to ensure Jesse Stone has the right home moving forward (which in turn opens up lots of new possibilities), and once this home is locked in, things should start taking shape from there.

Mr. Selleck…Don’t go for the “tweaking”. Jesse was cool and we liked him that. Hallmark has become one story over and over, just in a different town with different actors.

He needs to look towards Paramount as they are certainly not politically correct as much as other channels.

Even with his star power, which network it is produced for is far above his pay grade. As he said, he has agents that talk to producers (even if he gets Producer credits), he doesn’t make the decision.

Two items of note to Jesse Stone fans, not mentioned in the article. First they state the Blue Bloods series is on DVD. But so is all nine previous episodes of Jesse Stone. So at least we have these.
There has also been some talk about Hallmark making changes in their mysteries. That is true. For the most part new films are called “signature” films. Meaning they are Hallmark original ideas and not based on book series. Alison Sweeney (of the Hallmark Mysteries: Chronicle Mysteries) stated in an interview that by using original scripts based on original stories allows the network opportunity to update a character as they are not bound by the plot of the original book. But Hallmark contracted for two films and only made one..for whatever reason.

Selleck was doing Blue Bloods, and said he needed more time with his family, and never fulfilled his obligation to Hallmark. Since I love the series Jesse Stone, I have been disgusted with him ever since. I have the entire series on DVD, but refused to watch Blue Bloods after he went all liberal like in real life.

I met Tom Selleck when he was filming Magnum P.I. for my then boss, Glen Larson in the 1980’s. The Jesse Stone series in my opinion is Tom’s best work and equal to or better than the best out there today. Great scripts, alluring music, dark and moody in a wonderful New England setting fraught with dry humor, one liners most writers kill for and scenes that bring tears to your eyes. As Glen would say, this is a damn home run production. If he were alive today, he’d be producing it himself! I would love to write an episode or two myself. Go get’em Tom. You’ve got a captive audience!! $$ -Cary B
