Who is the Candyman?
Candyman is a mythical bogeyman, who appears across a series of movies: Candyman (1992), Candyman: Farewell to the Flesh (1995), Candyman: Day of the Dead (1999) and Candyman (2021). The character is initially played by actor Tony Todd, who appears in all four movies.
What is Candyman’s real name?
The original Candyman’s real name is Daniel Robitaille. Before becoming Candyman, Robitaille was a 19th Century African-American artist, and son of a slave, who made a living by painting portraits of wealthy white people.
But things took a sinister turn for Robitaille after he developed a relationship with the daughter of one of his clients. The relationship angered the man greatly, and he sent a mob after Robitaille to inflict punishment on him.
Robitaille was captured by the mob, which comprised a collection of men, women, and children. They mutilated Robitaille, by cutting off his right hand, then they covered him in honey, leaving him to be stung to death by bees.
But death did not take Robitaille, and his soul was transferred into a mirror. He then became a hook-wielding vengeful figure, known as the Candyman, who could return in a ghostly form, once his name was recounted five times into a mirror.
Where did the original Candyman get his name?
As detailed in the movie, Candyman: Farewell to the Flesh, the name Candyman came from one of the mob members who attacked Robitaille.
When honey was smeared on Robitaille, some of it splashed onto a child in the crowd. He tasted it, noted how it tasted of candy, and this prompted the mob to nickname Robitaille as the ‘Candyman’.
