If you’re a horror fan, then you’ll know that Candyman hit cinema screens this weekend. The movie is the fourth entry in the Candyman series, following Candyman (1992), Candyman: Farewell to the Flesh (1995), and Candyman: Day of the Dead (1999), and tells the story of a supernatural urban legend.

Those who are familiar with the iconic horror series will know the main star of the Candyman films is Tony Todd. The actor appeared in all of the movies prior to 2021’s Candyman, playing the role of Daniel Robitaille, aka the eponymous Candyman.

But what about this new instalment? Does Tony Todd appear in Candyman 2021 and is he reprising the role of the title villain?

Tony Todd does appear in Candyman 2021, once again playing the role of Daniel Robitaille. However, Todd only appears briefly, at the very end of the film and is not the main villain of the movie.

The reason Todd is largely absent from the film is because Daniel Robitaille is not the main focus of Candyman 2021. The film instead zeroes in on two new characters who represent the Candyman of this tale.

Confused? Don’t be – it’s fairly straightforward.

In the original Candyman trilogy (1992 – 1999), Daniel Robitaille was the Candyman. The films revolved around the concept of one supernatural villain, terrorising a succession of people.

In 2021’s Candyman the mythology is expanded to establish that there is actually more than one Candyman. According to this new movie, Candyman is a name given to multiple people who at some point in their lives were brutally murdered and have then returned from beyond the grave as a supernatural force.

In Candyman 2021 Daniel Robitaille is noted as being the first Candyman. Others have since followed in his footsteps, including Sherman Fields and Anthony McCoy – the two Candymen of the 2021 movie.

Sherman Fields was a disabled man, who during the 1970s was wrongly accused of placing razor blades in candy pieces given to children. Fields was tracked down, then beaten and killed by police officers in a racially motivated attack.

Shortly after his death, Fields returned under the guise of Candyman. He appears multiple times throughout the movie as the supernatural villain of the story.

As for Anthony McCoy, he is an artist who moves into the Cabrini-Green estate in 2021. Here he befriends a local laundrette owner, William Burke, who tells him about the legend of the Candyman – specifically what became of Sherman Fields.

But when Burke tells McCoy about the Candyman legend he has an ulterior motive – he wants McCoy to become the latest incarnation of the supernatural villain. Throughout the course of the movie, McCoy undertakes a transformation (aided by some brutality from Burke), which turns him into the latest Candyman.

So, for Candyman 2021 there are three Candymen in the story. Sherman Fields is Candyman for the bulk of the movie, with Anthony McCoy taking over toward the end of the film, before Daniel Robitaille makes a brief cameo.

Daniel Robitaille appears during the final moments of the movie, to make it clear that all the Candymen are connected. This short scene allows Tony Todd to appear on screen in a quick cameo as both a nod to fans of the original movies, and as a reminder that his character started the legend of the Candyman.

Now I know what you’re thinking: The original Candyman movies were made in the 1990s when Todd was in his 30s/40s, but surely Todd is in his 60s in the 2021 movie, right?

Yes and no.

Yes, Tony Todd does return to the role of Daniel Robitaille after a 20+ year gap, and when he is in his 60s, but he doesn’t look any older. A bit of digital de-ageing is used to ensure the actor looks just like he did in the ‘90s!

So, there you go. Candyman 2021 includes three different Candymen, with Tony Todd aka Daniel Robitaille being one of them!

And now you know.
