2004’s Catwoman is often considered to be one of the worst comic book movies of all-time, and for good reason – it’s pretty dire. The movie – originally conceived as a spin-off of Batman Returns (1992) – was a poor excuse for a film, with pitiful performances and woeful special effects.
But what if it had been a success? What if it had been the catalyst for a shared movie universe?
Long before Man of Steel (2013), Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice (2016), Wonder Woman (2017) and the like kicked off a shared DC movie universe, Catwoman arrived in cinemas. The film was pretty much a standalone tale, however, it did include a (very) brief nod to Batman Returns, therefore kind of creating the potential building blocks for a shared universe.
OK, so the nod (a picture of Michelle Pfeiffer’s Catwoman) was a tenuous link at best, but can you imagine if the movie had been a financial success? Would Warner Bros. Pictures’ have used this film to establish a universe?
Probably not. But what if the studio did?
What would that universe have been like and would it still be around today?

This shared universe would have included four Batman movies – Batman (1989), Batman Returns, Batman Forever (1995) and Batman & Robin (1997) – as well as Catwoman, but what else?
Would Superman Returns (2006) have been linked to it in someway? Maybe Green Lantern (2011)?
Would it have effected the Christopher Nolan Batman trilogy? More importantly would we have seen a crop of Catwoman sequels hit theatres over the years? Catwoman II: A Tail of Two Kitties? Catwoman III: Die Catwoman Die?
Just imagine.
You think the DC movie universe has problems now – just think what could have happened!
