What is Marvel’s ‘What If?

What If?’ is an anthology comic book published by Marvel Comics. The comic tells iconic stories from the Marvel Universe, but from a new angle.

For example, in the Marvel Universe Peter Parker became Spider-Man after being bitten by a radioactive spider. But what if the spider never bit Parker? What if the spider bit Peter’s Aunt May? Or what if the spider killed Uncle Ben?

In essence, ‘What If?’ takes established continuity and turns it on its head to create a whole new story. The result is an intriguing collection of tales, often with dark, twisted outcomes.

The first issue of ‘What If?’ was published in 1977 and carried the title: ‘What if… Spider-Man had joined the Fantastic Four?’ The issue was a hit with fans and the comic continued to be published throughout the end of the 1970s and into the 1980s.

After a short pause during the mid-to-late ‘80s, ‘What If?’ returned to comic book shelves for a second run. This second volume became very successful and ran for almost a decade.

A third volume arrived in the ‘00s, followed by a fourth, and a fifth, and so on. The comic still pops up on shelves today, with little breaks in between.

What are some of the most memorable tales from ‘What If?

Throughout its publishing life (which has included many revivals), ‘What If?’ has served up some truly memorable tales. Some of these stories include ‘What if.. Silver Surfer Possessed the Infinity Gauntlet?

What if… The Punisher killed Spider-Man?

What if Mr. Sinister had formed the X-Men?

And a personal favourite, ‘What if Rogue possessed the power of Thor?

These stories are just a tiny example of the vast collection of ‘What If?’ comics that Marvel has published over the years. There are hundreds of stories, with some truly imaginative premises.

I should also note that some of the comics have even inspired storylines in the main Marvel Universe. Sometimes, the ‘what if?’ scenario is that good it gets reworked for the main Marvel Universe.

Examples of this include:

  • What If… Jane Foster had found the hammer of Thor?
  • What if… the Hulk had the brain of Bruce Banner?
  • What If… Spider-Man’s clone lived?
