Walt Disney Studio’s live-action remake of The Lion King is just about to clear the $1 billion mark at the worldwide box office*. The film will pass the milestone within the next day or two, which is less than two weeks since its release.

The Lion King will be the fifth movie of 2019 to cross $1 billion. The film joins Captain Marvel, Avengers: Endgame, Aladdin, and Spider-Man: Far From Home in the billionaire club.

*Claps repeatedly*

Directed by Jon Favreau, The Lion King is an update of the 1994 Walt Disney Animated Classic. The film features the voice talents of Donald Glover, Beyoncé, Seth Rogan, Billy Eichner, Chiwetel Ejiofor, and James Earl Jones, and is the latest in a line of Disney remakes.

On Saturday I posted my review of The Lion King. If you want to know my thoughts, click on the link and have a read. You can also read my reviews of Aladdin and Dumbo from when they hit cinema screens earlier this year.

So, what’s next?

The next live-action Disney movie is Maleficent: Mistress of Evil, the sequel to 2014’s Maleficent (a loose reworking of Sleeping Beauty). This will be followed by Mulan in 2020 and then The Little Mermaid.

A Lady and the Tramp movie and a film about Cruella de Vil are also on the way.
