I’m watching Super (2010) (for the very first time) for two reasons:
- Super is written and directed by James Gunn.
- Super has a (sort of) loose connection to Brightburn – the James Gunn produced horror movie I watched earlier today.
For these two reasons I thought it was the right time to watch this movie.
I should now add that I know very little about Super other than what I’ve stated above. So, this could be a good movie, it could be a bad movie – I honestly have no idea.
What I do know, is that I am going to offer up my thoughts momentarily.

Initial observations:
- Sean Gunn
- Kevin Bacon
- Michael Rooker
- Linda Cardellini
- Nathan Fillion
This movie has a great cast!
Oh, and Liv Tyler is here too. Still, a great cast.
Ellen Page is also in this film. I like Ellen Page.

Additional observations:
Is James Gunn in this movie, dressed up as a demon?
*Checks time*
OK, so I’ve gone 45 minutes into this movie and… I’m bored. Not gonna lie, this is not my favourite James Gunn movie.
*Continues with movie*
So, the premise of this film is that an average Joe has become a super hero (and I use the term ‘hero’ very loosely). He has teamed up with a savage Ellen Page and is dispensing rather violent justice.
*Cough*
Kick-Ass
*Cough*
OK, so this film isn’t Kick-Ass, but there are shades of it.

I’m not sure if it’s the tone of this film or it’s just me, but this feels like a chore to watch. This is certainly no Guardians of the Galaxy.
*Continues with the movie*
A male rape scene and Liv Tyler’s face materialising in puke – yep, this film is definitely not for me.
*Clicks stop*
Conclusion:
Tonally all over the place, and with some scenes that are a bit extreme (for my taste anyway), there’s little to enjoy about Super. There are brief flashes of good ideas, and as noted above the film veers towards Kick-Ass territory, but sadly it misses the mark at pretty much every opportunity.
Not a fan. Not a fan at all.
Having watched Super I can now safely say I will never watch it again.

If you happen to like Super, and you feel I am missing the point/good stuff in this film, then feel free to let me know in the comments section. I am aware that Super has a cult following, but it did nothing for me.
