Hot on the heels of Iron Fist‘s cancellation, Netflix has just cancelled another show – Luke Cage.
A joint statement by Marvel Television & Netflix (via Variety), said:
“Unfortunately, ‘Marvel’s Luke Cage’ will not return for a third season. Everyone at Marvel Television and Netflix is grateful to the dedicated showrunner, writers, cast and crew who brought Harlem’s Hero to life for the past two seasons, and to all the fans who have supported the series.”
Prior to the show’s cancellation there was talk of a third season. It would now appear that Netflix has had a change of mind.
Addressing the show’s cancellation on social media, the Luke Cage social media team posted the following…
This is the second official cancellation of a Netflix/Marvel show, but likely the third overall. The general response to The Defenders was less than stellar and news on any further seasons of the show has pretty much dried up.
Earlier in the week, I published a post suggesting that Iron Fist‘s cancellation is not necessarily a bad thing. I’ll admit, I’m a little more upset about Luke Cage‘s cancellation, but perhaps this will lead to something new, including a re-jig of the Netflix Marvel shows – unless they are all simply winding down.
While this does seem to be the end of the road for Luke Cage as a show, this doesn’t mean this is the end of the road for the character. It’s possible Luke Cage will pop up in another show (Jessica Jones, perhaps?) and it’s entirely possible he could feature in a future Marvel movie.
Only time will tell.
