Today, October 16th 2018, children’s television programme, Blue Peter turns 60 years’ old. The show, which has been on air continuously since 1958, is the longest-running children’s series in the world.

If you live outside of the UK you probably have no idea what Blue Peter is, however for the rest of us the show is part of our childhoods. In short: Blue Peter is a children’s series which covers a range of topics from travel reports and items on recycling to cookery, dance routines, music and more.

A team of presenters steer the show and they are ably assisted by a variety of pets who are part of the Blue Peter family. It sounds a bit bizarre and I suppose it is, but it works and there really is nothing else like this show on TV.

To demonstrate just how popular the series is, earlier in the year Blue Peter was crowned the greatest children’s TV show of all-time, in a poll conducted by the Radio Times. The show beat the likes of Grange Hill, Newsround, Tiswas, Live & Kicking, Rainbow and more.

Should you want to relive the glory days of Blue Peter past then switch on to the CBBC channel at 5pm today. To mark the show’s birthday a whole host of former presenters will be joining the current team – Lindsey Russell and Radzi Chinyanganya – for a live special episode.
