The Nun, the fifth entry in The Conjuring Universe, is now in cinemas, ushering in a new chapter for the horror series. The movie – directed by Corin Hardy – is a spin-off from 2016’s The Conjuring 2 and sees the return of the demon, Valak.

The following discussion answers a few key questions about the movie…

Which Conjuring movies has The Nun previously featured in?

The Nun – aka the demon, Valak – has previously appeared in two movies set within The Conjuring Universe – the interconnected horror series from New Line Cinema.

Valak first appeared in the 2016 movie, The Conjuring 2 as the chief villain of the film.

In 2017’s Annabelle: Creation, Valak is referenced during the course of the movie and appears during a post-credit scene at the end of the film.

Where does The Nun fit into The Conjuring Universe?

In terms of production, The Nun is the fifth entry in The Conjuring Universe, following The Conjuring (2013), Annabelle (2014), The Conjuring 2 (2016) and Annabelle: Creation (2017). However, in terms of the timeline, The Nun is set before these four films so is effectively (for now) the first entry in the series.

If you have never seen a Conjuring movie, should you start with The Nun?

While The Nun is the first entry in the timeline of The Conjuring Universe, the movie is designed as a prequel rather than a starting point for the series. The film makes references to previous entries in the series and as such is best viewed as the fifth movie.

Are Ed and Lorraine Warren in The Nun?

Ed and Lorraine Warren – as played by Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga – are paranormal investigators and the lead characters in The Conjuring and The Conjuring 2. Their characters form the backbone of the series.

Neither Wilson nor Farmiga filmed new material for The Nun, however footage taken from the previous Conjuring movies does appear in the movie. So yes, the characters do appear, but it’s nothing that hasn’t been seen before.

Does Annabelle appear in The Nun?

Annabelle is a doll that features heavily within The Conjuring Universe. To date, the doll has featured in The Conjuring, Annabelle and Annabelle Creation.

Annabelle does not feature in The Nun and is not mentioned at all in the movie.

Does The Nun have a post-credit scene?

Clocking in at around the 90 minute mark (1hr 36mins to be exact), The Nun is a pretty short affair, making it bladder friendly for those who are off to the cinema this weekend. But when the credits roll, do you need to stay in your seat for a post-credit scene?

No – No you do not.

While The Nun does provide links back to previous movies in The Conjuring Universe, the film does not include a post-credit scene teasing any future movies. So, if you are heading to the cinema and you don’t know whether or not to stay in your seat once the movie is over, now you know you don’t need to.

What is the next film after The Nun?

The next entry in The Conjuring Universe is an as-yet-untitled Annabelle movie – the third solo offering for the demonic doll. Annabelle 3 is currently scheduled for release in July 2019.

Are more Conjuring Universe movies planned?

Yes. As mentioned above, a third Annabelle movie is set for release next year. Following this, a spin-off based on The Crooked Man – as seen in The Conjuring 2 – is also in the pipeline, along with The Conjuring 3.

Should The Nun become a financial success then a sequel is also likely, although nothing has been confirmed at present.
