Back in May, shortly after the eleventh season of The X-Files concluded, I published a post suggesting the show was pretty much done and dusted. Fox Television CEO and Chairman Gary Newman commented that there was “no plans to do another season” and that seemed like the end of that.

Of course, Newman’s comment didn’t stop X-Files creator Chris Carter from suggesting the show could return for a possible twelfth season. Well, that is until now, when he kind of suggests it won’t be coming back.

In a recent interview with Den of Geek, Carter said:

“Right now, of course, it’s up in the air, in terms of Gillian (Anderson)’s interest in doing the show. I think she’s stated that she’s finished her run. That certainly changes things, and also the sale of Fox to either Disney or Comcast – it looks like Disney now – I think that will change things, and certainly they’ll be looking at the show and wondering what its future would be. So right now we’re playing a wait-and-see with all those variables.”

He added:

“It’s about Gillian’s involvement. For me, The X-Files is Mulder and Scully, so even though we did the show without David (Duchovny), without Mulder, for a time, I always felt like her science was the centre of the show. In the end, it is a science show, and it makes it all-important.”

So, putting aside the Fox/Disney situation, Carter is kind of suggesting that he wouldn’t do the show without Gillian Anderson, even though he’s previously suggested he would. Confusing much?

As Anderson has previously stated that she is 100% done with The X-Files, if Carter’s recent comments are to be believed, this means The X-Files is officially over.

Case closed?
