In 1992, Batman: The Animated Series landed on television. The cartoon show, based on the DC Comics character of the same name, followed the story of Batman and his ongoing fight for justice in Gotham City.

Upon making its debut, the series was deemed a colossal hit with audiences and fast became must-see television. Critics loved the show’s sharp writing, excellent plotting, and superb animation, while fans appreciated the care that was taken to ensure the Batman mythology was presented just right.

One of the defining successes of Batman: The Animated Series was its crazy cast of core villains. And one of the best rogues was the Penguin, aka Oswald Cobblepot, who appeared in the series multiple times.

Every episode of Batman: The Animated Series featuring the Penguin

In total, the Penguin appeared as a main character in eight episodes of Batman: The Animated Series, along with four cameo appearances. The main eight episodes included the following:

I’ve Got a Batman in my Basement

Penguin made his first appearance in I’ve Got a Batman in my Basement. In this episode, the Penguin and Batman cross paths with a group of would-be detective kids.

Unfortunately, Batman becomes injured, giving Penguin the opportunity to get the upper hand. That is until the kids step in and help the Caped Crusader out.

The Strange Secret of Bruce Wayne

In The Strange Secret of Bruce Wayne, Batman’s secret identity is exposed, giving Dr. Hugo Strange an opportunity to make some cash. Deciding to use this knowledge to increase his wealth, Strange decides to sell the information to a selection of bidders including the Penguin, Joker, and Two-Face.

Almost Got ‘Im

In Almost Got ‘Im, a collection of Batman’s most fiendish foes get together for a game of cards. During the course of the evening, the goons trade stories about past encounters with the Caped Crusader in which they ‘almost got ‘im’.

The Mechanic

In The Mechanic, the Penguin becomes aware of a secret mechanic named Earl, who is responsible for fixing the Batmobile whenever it runs into difficulties. Finding a way to get to Earl, the Penguin orders the Batmobile to be booby trapped, to put Batman and Robin in danger.

Birds of a Feather

In Birds of a Feather, Penguin appears to be on the straight and narrow after becoming a member of high society – something he has always dreamed of. Problem is, his entry into the realms of the upper class is one big joke at his expense.

Blind as a Bat

In Blind as a Bat, during the latest battle between Penguin and Batman, the Caped Crusader temporarily loses his sight. Could this be the opportunity the Penguin needs to rid Gotham of its greatest hero?

Girl’s Night Out

In Girls’ Night Out, Ivy and Harley join forces with Livewire to conducted a crime spree across Gotham, crossing paths with Penguin in the process. But with Batman out of town and Superman busy, it’s up to Batgirl and Supergirl to stop them!

Judgment Day

In Judgment Day, a new vigilante calling himself the Judge is in Gotham City. Not only does this cause a headache for Batman, but also for Penguin, Riddler, Two-Face, and Killer Croc.

Cameos

In addition to the eight episodes listed above, Penguin also popped up in brief cameo appearances in four episodes:

• Dreams in Darkness 
• Second Chance 
• Joker’s Millions 
• The Ultimate Thrill 

Please note: Cameo appearances can indicate a reduced/small role in an episode, or can simply be a quick on-screen appearance that lasts mere seconds. All of the episodes which feature cameo appearances have been placed at the end of this list, as these are not Penguin stories.

Batman: Mystery of the Batwoman

In addition to his twelve television appearances in the show, Penguin also featured in the Batman: The Animated Series spin-off movie: Batman: Mystery of the Batwoman (2003). Produced by Warner Bros. Animation, the film was released as a direct-to-DVD/VHS title which acted as a standalone tale, introducing a new character to the Batman mythology, namely the Batwoman.

In the movie, a mysterious new heroine arrives in Gotham City and no one knows who she is, including the Batman. But as the Caped Crusader sets to work trying to solve her identity, he soon finds he has other problems on his hands, when the Penguin, Bane, and Rupert Thorne engage in illegal activity.
