The long-rumoured Joker solo movie has been given the go ahead from Warner Bros.
The new movie – a Joker origin story – will be directed and co-written by Todd Phillips and will star Joaquin Phoenix in the title role. According to The Hollywood Reporter, filming will begin in September, with Scott Silver on board as the film’s other co-writer.
The studio is describing the movie as an “exploration of a man disregarded by society [that] is not only a gritty character study, but also a broader cautionary tale.” The film will be budgeted at around $55 million and will be much darker in tone than some other comic book movies.
Oh and just in case there is any confusion, this film will not be connected to Suicide Squad (2016) so will not be based around the same Joker as played by Jared Leto. Warner Bros. are still considering a Leto-centric Joker movie, but this isn’t it.
No release date has been set for this movie yet.
