Marvel Studios’ has set Black Panther‘s US home video release for May.

Yep – May!

The movie – which arrived in US theatres on February 16th – will be available to purchase on May 8th for digital & 4K and Blu-ray and DVD on May 15th. That is just under two months since it made its debut.

Marvel announced the news via a YouTube video, captioned: “Experience the worldwide phenomenon.”

At present, Black Panther has accumulated more than $1.3 billion dollars at the worldwide box office since its release. In the US, the film stands as the No.1 superhero movie of all-time and worldwide, Black Panther is the third most successful Marvel movie, sitting just behind the first two Avengers films.

While the box office returns are starting to slow down, the movie could still pull in punters for a while longer – especially with the forthcoming release of Avengers: Infinity War hitting cinemas at the end of this month. So is setting a May home video release such a good idea?

With studios pushing for bigger opening weekends, to capitalise on a movie’s release – rather than playing the long game – the emphasis is now on a movie making back its money in a very, very short period of time. As a result, the window between a film’s big screen release and it’s home video release has continued to decrease.

But is this a good thing?

Are you in favour of a short release window or do you think that (some) movies need to play the long game? The Greatest Showman has demonstrated that movies can still make movie over time.
