In 1987, Chuck Russell sat in the director’s chair for horror sequel, A Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors. The movie was the beginning of a successful career in the film industry for Russell, which would see him work on a number of high-profile projects, with a number of high-profile actors.
Not all of his films were big hits, and not all of them were well known, but he kept working throughout the decades, moving from horror, to comedy, to action, building up a portfolio of pictures along the way. He also delivered a couple of very popular pictures which have dedicated fan bases today, including one of the most popular comic book movies of the 1990s.

1980s
As noted above, Russell began his directing career in 1987 with the third entry in the A Nightmare on Elm Street horror series, Dream Warriors. The series – which began in 1984 under director Wes Craven – needed a little course correction following the release of the second instalment, and Russell did this and did it well.
In fact, ask any fan of the Nightmare series which is the best film, and outside of the original, Russell’s movie is often regarded as the next most popular entry. It’s the Freddy Krueger sequel many cite as their favourite, and features many scenes which stand out as iconic moments in the Krueger story.
Following hot on the heels of Dream Warriors, Russell directed the sci-fi horror, The Blob. This remake of a Steve McQueen film from the ’50s, was a gross-out body horror about a deadly entity which crash lands in a small town, where it promptly starts to consume the locals.
Although The Blob initially stumbled at the box-office, the film soon found an audience on the rental market. Today it is regarded as a gem of the ’80s and beloved by horror fans.

1990s
Into the 1990s, and Russell went from a gross-out body horror to one of the funniest comic book movies of the ’90s with The Mask. The film starred a then-up-and-coming Jim Carrey, and followed the story of a bank clerk who finds the magical mask of Loki, which grants him incredible reality-altering powers.
The Mask was a huge hit for Russell, becoming the fourth highest grossing movie of 1994. It also helped propel Carrey to super-stardom.
With Russell’s status as a director now reaching new heights, he went on to helm super-star, Arnold Schwarzenegger in the 1996 action film, Eraser. The picture wasn’t a huge critical hit, but it did decent numbers at the box-office.

2000s
Into the 2000s and its was back to horror for Russell, with the supernatural chiller, Bless the Child. The film followed the story of a woman who discovers her niece is being sought by a Satanic cult.
From here, Russell side-stepped from horror to action-adventure for The Scorpion King – a prequel/spin-off of the Brendan Fraser Mummy movies. The film starred Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson, in one of his earliest film roles, and filled in background details on the eponymous King who previously appeared in The Mummy Returns.

2016
Into the 2010s and following the release of The Scorpion King, fourteen years passed before Russell took on his next directing gig, this time teaming up with John Travolta for the vigilante action-thriller, I Am Wrath. This was then followed – perhaps surprisingly – by the Indian Hindi-language action-adventure picture, Junglee.

2020s
And finally, into the 2020s and Chuck Russell re-teamed with John Travolta for the action film, Paradise City. The movie – which also starred Bruce Willis – focused on a son’s attempt to find the killers of his bounty hunter father.
Paradise City was then followed by what would be Russell’s final film before his death in 2026, the supernatural horror, Witchboard. The movie was a remake of the 1986 picture of the same name, with Madison Iseman and Jamie Campbell Bower amongst the cast.
