The 1980s and 1990s

As noted above, Matt Damon begin his film career in 1988 with a small role in the Julia Roberts comedy, Mystic Pizza. From here he took an uncredited role in 1989’s Field of Dreams, before sliding into the 1990s with Rising Son and School Ties.

None of these films were particularly landmark pictures for Damon’s career, however, he continued ever onward and took roles in Courage Under Fire, and Chasing Amy. He also appeared alongside Danny DeVito and Claire Danes in The Rainmaker.

In 1998 things changed dramatically, when Matt Damon co-wrote and co-starred in the Robin Williams drama, Good Will Hunting. Damon wrote the movie with his best friend, Ben Affleck, and not only was the movie well received by critics, but it went on to pick up two Academy Awards, including the award for Best Original Screenplay.

From here, Damon went on to appear in a number of high-profile pictures including Saving Private Ryan, Dogma, and The Talented Mr. Ripley.

The 2000s

Moving into the 2000s and Matt Damon begin the decade providing vocal duties to the animated sci-fi film, Titan A.E. From here he appeared alongside Will Smith in The Legend of Bagger Vance, before appearing in Finding Forrester.

In 2001 he took on the part of Linus in Steven Soderbergh’s Ocean’s Eleven, a role he would reprise in 2004 for Ocean’s Twelve, and in 2007 for Ocean’s Thirteen. The Ocean‘s franchise was a significant collection of movies for the actor, but Damon’s signature role would actually come in 2002 when he played the role of Jason Bourne in The Bourne Identity.

The film focused on a highly skilled operative with amnesia and was a big hit with critics and audiences alike. So much so, it prompted Damon to return for 2004’s The Bourne Supremacy and 2007’s The Bourne Ultimatum.
