This August, slasher movie, Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miasma heads into cinemas. The horror movie from writer/director Jane Schoenbrun, stars Hannah Einbinder and Gillian Anderson, and focuses on a queer filmmaker who is hired to direct the latest instalment in long-running slasher series, Camp Miasma.
With horror being very hot right now (Weapons, Sinners, Obsession, Backrooms, etc), Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miasma is likely to attract attention when it hits screens. And with such a provocative title, the attention is almost certainly going to come from teenage horror fans.
But when Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miasma makes its debut, will it be suitable for teenagers? Let’s take a look at the rating…

Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miasma UK rating

In the UK, Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miasma has been certified ‘15’ by the British Board of Film Classification (BBFC). The film has received this rating for “strong bloody violence, sex, drug misuse, discrimination, threat (and) language.”
In the UK, if a movie is given a ‘15’ certificate it means the film is deemed suitable for audiences aged 15 or over. No one under the age of 15 will be allowed to view a ‘15’ certificate in a UK cinema.
As such, the BBFC believe Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miasma is suitable for some teenagers (those aged 15 and above), but is not suitable for all teens (i.e. anyone aged 14 or below).

Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miasma US rating

In the US, Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miasma has been rated ‘R’ by the Motion Picture Association of America (MPA). The film has received this rating for bloody violence, gore, sexual content, graphic nudity, drug use and some language.
In the US, if a movie is rated ‘R’ it means it is restricted. The restriction is that no one under the age of 17 is permitted to watch an ‘R’ rated movie in a US cinema unless they are accompanied by a parent or adult guardian.
However (and here’s where things differ between the UK and the US), any one of any age can watch an ‘R’ rated movie in a US cinema, as long as they adhere to the rule above. This means a 13-year-old could watch Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miasma in a US cinema, so long as they are accompanied by an adult.
But should they? Well, that’s where parental discretion comes into play.
The MPA provides guidance and a rating, but hands over the final responsibility to parents. Using the information provided, it’s up to you to decide if Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miasma is ultimately suitable for the teen horror fan in your household.
