In 2015, comic book fantasy series, Supergirl flew onto television screens. Starring Melissa Benoist as Kara Danvers/Supergirl, the show followed the life of Superman’s cousin as she balances heroic feats with day-to-day living.
Initially conceived as a stand-alone show, which aired on CBS in the US, Supergirl spent its first season largely revolving around Kara, as well as her friends and colleagues. However, from Season Two the show switched networks to The CW and from here Supergirl became incorporated into the ‘Arrowverse’ – a collection of interconnected superhero shows featuring Arrow, The Flash, Legends of Tomorrow, and Batwoman.
It was at this point that characters and storylines from Supergirl would crossover into other shows. For example, during Season Two, Supergirl crossed over with episodes of Arrow, The Flash, and Legends of Tomorrow for the crossover event, ‘Invasion!’.
More crossovers followed, as did plenty more episodes of Supergirl. The show was a significant success with viewers, becoming a ratings winner, and ran for six seasons in total.
