Another day, another edition of the It’s A Stampede! Newsletter. And today I’m taking you behind the scenes of this blog once again to talk movies, TV shows, comics, and everything else going on when I’m not typing away on a keyboard.

This year I’m all about detaching from social media, as well as endless doom scrolling, and re-investing my down time in more creative pursuits. This includes watching and reading things which are more enjoyable and a better use of my time.

You may recall from a previous edition of the Newsletter that when I’m not writing for It’s A Stampede! I am busy hopping from one streaming service to the next, working my way through various television shows along the way. Well, my TV journey has continued with four shows, which include Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur and Star Wars: Visions on Disney+, Monarch: Legacy of Monsters on Apple TV, and The Summer I Turned Pretty on Prime Video.

The two Disney+ shows I have previously watched to a certain degree, I’ve just never finished them, so I started back at the beginning and have been working through both at pace. Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur is simply superb, while Star Wars: Visions is also rather enjoyable.

I wish Disney would take what they’ve done with the Star Wars: Visions anthology format and apply it to Marvel characters. Yes, I know What If…? exists, but it’s not the same, and I’m convinced there could be a fantastic Marvel anthology show in the portfolio if only Disney would develop it.

When it comes to Monarch: Legacy of Monsters, this one I’ve just started to dip my toes into, while still taking advantage of a free Apple TV trial. So far it’s not bad, and I shall be sticking with it, but I’m not sure it is must-see TV. Am I wrong? All you Monarch fans out there, let me know.

As for The Summer I Turned Pretty, it’s yet another teen drama, which dare I say is the equivalent of Netflix’s My Life with the Walter Boys, but I live for the drama and I’m already two seasons in, with just one more to go.

More TV shows will follow, as I continue to play catch-up on series I’ve either missed or never got round to finishing. I am determined to rinse the streaming subscriptions in the most efficient, cost effective way possible, and will be flying through shows in the days ahead.

Good reads

In addition to TV shows I’m currently trying to throw myself back into comics. I’m continuing to read Absolute Batman, as well as the regular, current run of Batman, and I’m now dipping back into Uncanny X-Men

It’s been quite a while since I read any of the major X-Men books, but writer Gail Simone has pulled me back in. I’m jumping back on board a couple years into Simone’s run, but I plan to go back and catch up on what I’ve missed so far.

Could this be the beginning of a new love affair with modern X-Men comics? Only time will tell, but I’m hopeful!

Outside of comics, there’s also lots more reading fun with SFX and Empire magazine. I’m continuing my efforts to support well-written publications such as these, and I shall continue to tell y’all to do the same!

Movies, movies, movies

When I’m not catching up on TV shows and comics, the weekly movie night continues. I’ve spoken about this recently on It’s A Stampede!, but it’s worth saying again: Set up a regular movie night – they are a great way to switch off from the outside world.

Each week, me and the other half sit down to watch a movie (usually on a Thursday night). Movies are chosen from what’s available on disc, video-on-demand, or the multitude of streaming services (not just Netflix) and generally it’s two hours of getting lost in a story, with no distractions and phones firmly put down or put away.

There are a million more things I would love to be doing with my free time, but quite frankly there’s simply not enough free time to go round. So, I’m making the most of what there is and I encourage you to do the same (when you’re not reading this blog, of course).

Alex
