In 1989, Marvel’s gun-toting vigilante, the Punisher took to the screen to appear in a self-titled action-adventure movie. The film – which starred Dolph Lundgren – followed the story of Frank Castle, aka the Punisher as he wages war on the Mafia and the Yakuza.

Released direct-to-video in the US (internationally overseas), The Punisher wasn’t a huge success, but it was a financial hit. Perhaps more importantly, it paved the way for further Punisher movies, which brought the Marvel Comics character back to the screen for more adventures.

But how many Punisher movies are there and is there a specific viewing order? For all the details, keep reading.

The Punisher (1989)

As noted above, the first entry in the Punisher movie series was 1989’s The Punisher. Dolph Lundgren took on the role of former undercover detective, Frank Castle, who becomes a vigilante after his wife and children are killed in a Mafia hit.

Presumed dead, Castle operates in the shadows as ‘The Punisher’. He takes on the criminal underworld while avoiding the police.

Largely a Punisher movie in name alone, the film was not a critical hit, but it did fine financially, taking $30 million at the international box-office from a budget of around $10 million. It also went on to become a cult hit on the video rental circuit. (89 mins)

The Punisher (2004)

Fifteen years would pass before the release of the next film, the stand-alone picture, The Punisher. Released in 2004, this action-adventure film retold Frank Castle’s origin from the beginning, with Thomas Jane playing the lead role.

In this movie, Frank is an undercover FBI agent who becomes the Punisher after his entire family (including extended family members) are killed at a family reunion. Vowing revenge, Frank/Punisher tracks down the mafia mob boss who ordered the hit. (123 mins)

Punisher: War Zone (2008)

As with the 1989 movie, 2004’s Punisher was a financial hit, but not a huge success. As such, Lionsgate Films (the studio behind the 2004 film) made the decision to produce another film, but opted to go down the route of a soft reboot rather than a direct sequel.

Titled Punisher: War Zone, Ray Stevenson took over the role of Frank/Punisher – a former Marine who lost his family to mob violence. During the course of the movie, Frank takes on the villanious Jigsaw and his brother Loony Bin Jim. (103 mins)

The Punisher: One Last Kill (2026)

Released to poor reviews and a distinct lack of interest from audiences, Punisher: War Zone flopped at the box-office. As such, Lionsgate opted not to produce any further Punisher movies, and the rights to the character reverted back to Marvel/Disney.

Moving forward, Marvel/Disney re-introduced Frank Castle/Punisher to a new audience, via a guest role on the second season of the Marvel Cinematic Universe series, Daredevil. Jon Bernthal took over the part.

From here, Bernthal was given his own show, titled The Punisher, which ran for two seasons between 2017 to 2019. This was then followed by a television special/’mini movie’ produced for Disney+ titled The Punisher: One Last Kill. (60 mins)

Spider-Man: Brand New Day (2026)

Continuing Bernthal’s tenure, Frank Castle/Punisher took a guest spot in the 2026 Spider-Man movie, Spider-Man: Brand New Day.
