Since making his debut in 1962, The Incredible Hulk has been one of Marvel Comics’ most enduring and most iconic characters. The Hulk has appeared in comics, TV shows and in computer games, and has even starred in a series of movies.

But what are all of the Hulk’s films? How many movies has he appeared in and what is the best order to watch them in?

In this post, I am putting the spotlight on Marvel’s Jade Giant. From live-action adventures to animated antics, these are all of the Hulk movies.

The Incredible Hulk TV movies

OK, let’s kick things off in the 1970s, with the Hulk’s first live-action adaptation – and what an adaptation it was! This is one that most people are familiar with, but are you aware of all the movies? Let’s see…

During the late ’70s, CBS was keen on developing a show based on the Hulk. To help get the potential series off the ground, the network developed two TV pilots to gauge interest.

The first pilot – titled The Incredible Hulk – hit television screens in 1977 and introduced audiences to Dr. David Banner, a scientist who could turn into the Hulk. The second pilot – initially titled The Return of the Incredible Hulk – aired three weeks later and furthered Banner’s story.

The pilots were successful enough to prove to CBS that the Hulk had legs and soon a television show followed, with Bill Bixby and Lou Ferrigno as the leads. That show would run for five seasons and be followed by a collection of television movies, beginning with The Incredible Hulk Returns (1988).

But how many movies were there altogether?

Well, the two pilots were released theatrically (outside of the US), and three films were produced after the show ended production. So, five movies in total.

If you wish to watch The Incredible Hulk TV movies in order, then please use the following list:

  • The Incredible Hulk (1977)
  • The Return of the Incredible Hulk (1977)*
  • The Incredible Hulk Returns (1988)
  • The Trial of the Incredible Hulk (1989)
  • The Death of the Incredible Hulk (1990)

If you’re interested in watching these movies, it is also worth your time watching The Incredible Hulk TV show. The series is regarded as one of the best comic-to-TV adaptations and is widely available on DVD, Blu-ray and digital.

*Please note: On home video releases, The Return of the Incredible Hulk is called Death in the Family. It appears as the second episode in Season One.

The Marvel Cinematic Universe

Back to live-action now, as the Hulk entered the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), first via a solo Incredible Hulk movie and then as a supporting character in Avenger-related titles.

In his first appearance in the MCU, Edward Norton took on the role of Bruce Banner for 2008’s The Incredible Hulk. The film was very much a standalone story, although it did contain links to the wider Marvel universe.

Following Norton’s turn as Banner, Mark Ruffalo took over the role, beginning with 2012’s The Avengers. This continued with a very brief cameo in Iron Man 3 (2013), before Ruffalo received more substantial parts in Avengers: Age of Ultron (2015), Thor: Ragnarok (2017), Avengers: Infinity War (2018) and Avengers: Endgame (2019).

The order to watch the MCU Hulk films is as follows:
