In 1990, The Hunt for Red October made its debut. The political thriller, starring Sean Connery and Alec Baldwin, followed the story of a CIA analyst tracking a Soviet submarine.
When The Hunt for Red October hit cinema screens the film marked the first time a book by author Tom Clancy was adapted for the screen. However, this would not be the only Tom Clancy adaptation – there were many.
Below is a run through of all the movies adapted from Tom Clancy stories. For all the details, keep reading.

The Tom Clancy movies

The Hunt for Red October (1990)
As noted above, the first time a Tom Clancy novel was adapted for film was 1990’s The Hunt for Red October. Set during the late Cold War era, the movie followed CIA intelligence analyst, Jack Ryan, as he tracks a rogue Soviet Captain and his sub. (135 mins)
Patriot Games (1992)
The Hunt for Red October was a critical and commercial hit and this led to a follow-up, the 1992 thriller, Patriot Games. For this second film Harrison Ford took over the role of Jack Ryan. (117 mins)
Clear and Present Danger (1994)
Patriot Games was also a success and in 1994, Harrison Ford returned for a third Jack Ryan movie in the shape of Clear and Present Danger. The story focused on Ryan as he learns the US President has triggered a war with Colombian drug cartels. (141 mins)
Tom Clancy’s OP Center (1995)
A change for this next Tom Clancy adaptation, which moves away from Jack Ryan to focus on Paul Hood, newly appointed director of the OP Center – a special agency which monitors international crisis. In the movie, terrorists steal nuclear missiles, leaving the OP team to track them down.
Originally broadcast in two parts, Tom Clancy’s OP Center was later re-edited and released as a movie. (114 mins)
NetForce (1999)
Set in the year 2005, this TV movie focuses on a division of the FBI known as NetForce. The team investigate internet crimes. (182 mins)
The Sum of All Fears (2002)
After Clear and Present Danger proved to be a hit at the box office back in 1994, work began on developing a fourth Jack Ryan movie, this time based on Tom Clancy’s 1988 novel, The Cardinal of the Kremlin. But when the project failed to get off the ground, Paramount turned its attention to adapting Clancy’s 1991 novel, The Sum of All Fears instead.
Harrison Ford was initially lined up to star in the film but he departed the project along with its director, Phillip Noyce. So, with both Ford and Noyce out, Paramount opted to stick with The Sum of All Fears, but turn it into a reboot rather than a sequel.
Ben Affleck took over the lead role in this fourth Jack Ryan movie. (124 mins)
Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit (2014)
Chris Pine took on the part of Jack Ryan for this next film – 2014’s Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit. This new entry was not based on an existing Tom Clancy novel, but was instead based on an original story. (105 mins)
Without Remorse (2021)
In 2021, another Tom Clancy adaptation was released, this time direct to streaming. Focusing on John Clark, Without Remorse centred its story around an elite Navy SEAL who sets out to avenge his wife’s murder. (109 mins)
Jack Ryan: Ghost War (2026)
In 2018, Amazon adapted the Jack Ryan novels for television, with John Krasinski in the lead role. Due to the popularity of the show, the series was accompanied by a spin-off movie titled Jack Ryan: Ghost War.
The movie followed Ryan as he reunites with CIA operatives against an enemy who knows their every move. (105 mins)

I would like to see Executive orders made into a movie–how great would it be to him as president. Alec Baldwin is the right age and a great actor. Jennifer Garner would be the perfect first Lady.
