This month, sci-fi film, Project Hail Mary arrives in cinemas. Directed by Phil Lord and Chris Miller, the film stars Ryan Gosling as Ryland Grace, a man who wakes up on an interstellar spacecraft with a very important mission to complete.

Based on the book of the same name by Andy Weir, Project Hail Mary is being touted as a big release for 2026. Early indications suggest it is going to be popular with audiences, and the initial preview trailer has already proved successful in marketing the movie (Amazon MGM Studios said it was the most viewed trailer for a non-existing IP movie in its first week of release).

So, when Project Hail Mary arrives in movie theatres in March, expect it to pull in audiences keen for some sci-fi escapism. And expect those audiences to be of all ages.

But when the movie does make its debut, will it be suitable for the whole family? Let’s take a look at the rating to find out.

Project Hail Mary UK age rating

In the UK, Project Hail Mary has been awarded a ‘12A’ certificate by the British Board of Film Classification (BBFC). The movie has received this rating for “moderate threat, rude humour, drug references, (and) implied strong language.”

In the UK, a ‘12A’ certificate movie is deemed most suitable for audiences aged 12 or over. However, anyone under the age of 12 can view a ‘12A’ in a UK cinema, as long as they are accompanied by a parent or adult guardian.

Parents and guardians should check up on the film before taking children under the age of 12, but if they think the film won’t be a problem for the younger members of the family, then they are free to take them. It’s essentially at the parent’s discretion.

And if you’re still not sure about what to expect from a ‘12A’ film, most superhero movies (especially Marvel films) tend to be classified as ‘12A’ in the UK. So, if you think about the type of content you might get in one of those movies, this can be a good way to gauge what type of content you might get in this.

Project Hail Mary US age rating

In the US, the Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA) has given Project Hail Mary a ‘PG-13’ rating for some thematic material and suggestive references.

In the US, when it comes to a ‘PG-13’ rated movie, parents are urged to be cautious, as some material may not be suitable for pre-teens. However, any one of any age can view a PG-13 – and they don’t need to be accompanied by an adult.

Similar to the ‘12A’ rating in the UK, most superhero movies tend to receive the ‘PG-13’ rating in the US. So, if you have youngsters in your family, and they are fine with the sort of tone and material found in your average superhero film, then they may be OK with this.
