From the 1960s onward, Harrison Ford has been appearing in a succession of movies of varying shape, size, and genre. His career has seen him take on some truly iconic roles, while over the years he has appeared in a wealth of movies including American Graffiti (1973), Patriot Games (1992), What Lies Beneath? (2000), and The Call of the Wild (2020), to name but a few.

His pictures have ranged from sci-fi and fantasy movies, to action-adventure films and horror. To some he is best known as Indiana Jones, to others he will always be the loveable space rogue, Han Solo, while a few may know him as the Red Hulk.

But irrespective of where you know him from or what his finest performance is, what do you know about Harrison Ford’s movies? If I asked you to name ten or twenty of his films, could you do it?

Well, don’t fret about it, because in this post I am taking a look back at the film career of Harrison Ford, with a rundown of all his movies. I will be going through his films decade-by-decade, to showcase all of the pictures in his portfolio, including films where he featured in uncredited roles.

The 1960s

Harrison Ford’s movie career began in the mid-1960s, with uncredited roles in films such as Dead Heat on a Merry-Go-Round and Luv. From here, he took a credited role in A Time for Killing and then he appeared in Journey to Shiloh.

At this point in time, Ford was far from being a huge international star. He was appearing in movies (as well as roles on television) now and again, but none of the parts were particularly notable and he had not made a name for himself in the grand scheme of things.

If you wish to check out his early work, Harrison Ford’s movies during the 1960s included:

  • Dead Heat on a Merry-Go-Round (1966)*
  • Luv (1967)*
  • A Time for Killing (1967)
  • Journey to Shiloh (1968)

The 1970s

Moving into the 1970s, and Ford continued to appear in movies, but at the beginning of the decade he still largely faded into the background. From an uncredited role in Zabriskie Point to a part in Getting Straight, none of the roles provided him with star status.

However, things began to change in 1973 when he took on the role of Bob Falfa in the George Lucas-directed coming-of-age movie, American Graffiti. This connection to Lucas paved the way for a much more substantial role in the future, when the actor was later cast in a little ol’ sci-fi fantasy film called Star Wars (aka Star Wars: A New Hope).

You’ve no doubt heard of it – and to be honest, who hasn’t?! Star Wars was a huge success when it was released back in 1977 and the film propelled Ford into the stratosphere.

From here on out, Ford’s profile rose considerably, and his career would never be the same again. But for those wanting to take at a look at his career pre-and-post-Star Wars, these are the names of the Harrison Ford movies during the 1970s:

  • Zabriskie Point (1970)
  • Getting Straight (1970)
  • The Intruders (1970)
  • American Graffiti (1973)
  • The Conversation (1974)
  • Judgment: The Court Martial of Lieutenant William Calley (1975)
  • Dynasty (1976)
  • The Possessed (1977)
  • Star Wars (1977)
  • Heroes (1977)
  • Force 10 from Navarone (1978)
  • The Star Wars Holiday Special (1978)
  • Hanover Street (1979)
  • Apocalypse Now (1979)
  • The Frisco Kid (1979)
  • More American Graffiti (1979)*

The 1980s

Onto the 1980s now, and with Ford now being a household name, he kick-started the decade with a return to the Star Wars universe for the sequel, The Empire Strikes Back. Here he reprised the role of Han Solo, much to the delight of audiences worldwide – and not for the last time!

But stepping back into the boots of Han Solo was just the start of what would be a fantastic decade for the actor. Shortly after appearing as part of the ensemble in the new Star Wars sequel, he went on to headline a new film of his very own: Raiders of the Lost Ark.

In Raiders, Ford got to play the part of archaeologist and adventurer, Indiana Jones. The role, and the film, would prove to be a smash-hit for the actor, and one which would set up a series of sequels.

In short: The 1980s was very good to Harrison Ford and provided him with a string of new movies. Between his Star Wars pictures and his Indiana Jones films, the actor got to appear in a range of movies, all of which helped to cement him as a Hollywood icon.

It was during this decade that Ford also returned to the Star Wars universe, initially with a role in The Force Awakens, before popping up in a brief cameo for The Rise of Skywalker. Slipping into the top five for the drama-thriller, Witness. In this movie, Ford delivers one of the best performances of his career playing detective John Book – a police officer who goes undercover to protect an Amish woman and her son, after the latter witnesses a murder.

#03 – Star Wars: Episode IV – A New Hope (1977)

Image: ©Lucasfilm/20th Century/Disney

Into the final three, and no list of top Harrison Ford films would be complete without an appearance from at least one Star Wars movie. A New Hope takes this spot, as it marked Ford’s debut in the role of Han Solo – one of his most iconic characters.

__

#02 – Star Wars: Episode V – The Empire Strike Back (1980)

Image: ©Lucasfilm/20th Century/Disney

OK, so this is where half of the internet will suggest The Empire Strikes Back is in exactly the right place on this list, and the other half will suggest the film should be positioned higher. Either way, Ford reprises the role of Han Solo, bringing more swagger and more sex appeal for this excellent Star Wars movie.

__

#01 – Raiders of the Lost Ark (1981)

Image: ©Paramount Pictures

Surely this one is a no-brainer? While Ford is brilliant as Han Solo in The Empire Strikes Back, it is 1981’s Raiders of the Lost Ark that has to take the top spot. It’s the film that introduced the world to Indiana Jones, with Ford at his best.
