In 1999, the romantic drama Message in a Bottle arrived in cinemas. The film – starring Kevin Costner and Robin Wright – followed the story of a researcher for the Chicago Tribune, who finds a love letter inside a bottle on the beach, then tracks down the original writer.

Message in a Bottle was based on a book of the same name by US romantic novelist, Nicholas Sparks. It was also the first of many films to be adapted from one of Sparks’ novels.

As noted above, the first film to be based on a Nicholas Sparks novel was 1999’s Message in a Bottle. Directed by Luis Mandoki, the film followed the story of Garrett (Kevin Costner) and Theresa (Robin Wright), as they develop a romance over a message in a bottle.

A Walk to Remember (2002)

The next film to be released was 2002’s A Walk to Remember. In this coming-of-age romantic drama from director Adam Shankman, Shane West and Mandy Moore take the lead roles, playing teenagers Landon and Jamie.

In the film, the pair grow close and fall in love. However, their future looks very uncertain, as Jamie is in the midst of a battle with leukaemia.

The Notebook (2004)

In The Notebook, Ryan Gosling and Rachel McAdams star in a love story which predominantly takes place during the 1940s. In the film, the pair meet as teens and enter into a relationship, but various problems get in the way, stopping them from having a straight forward romance.

Next up is Nights in Rodanthe – a romantic drama from director George C. Wolfe. In this film, Diane Lane plays a woman in the process of getting a divorce, who falls in love with a surgeon played by Richard Gere.

Channing Tatum and Amanda Seyfried take the lead in this next film – the romantic war drama, Dear John. In the film, Tatum plays the role of soldier John Tyree, who sends love letters to his girlfriend, Savannah Lynn Curtis (Seyfried), after he is deployed to war.

Directed by Julie Anne Robinson, The Last Song is a romantic coming-of-age teen drama, about a troubled teen who falls in love during the summer. Miley Cyrus and Liam Hemsworth star.

In director Scott Hicks’ romantic drama, The Lucky One, Zac Efron takes on the role of US Marine, Logan Thibault. In the movie, Thibault is serving in Irag when he discovers a photo of a woman, which he believes to be a lucky charm.

After Thibault returns home, he tracks down the mysterious woman, played by Taylor Schilling. The pair then enter into a romance.

Julianne Hough and Josh Duhamel star in the next movie – the romantic fantasy drama, Safe Haven. The film – from director Lasse Hallström – tells the story of a young woman with a mysterious past.
